UNM will not tolerate acts of racism or xenophobia
UNM Daily Lobo ^ | 9/19/07 | Rita Martinez-Purson, Cheo Torres

Posted on 09/23/2007 9:31:58 PM PDT by Peter R. Lynch

Editor,

We wish to respond to the recent incident involving the desecration of the Mexican national flag that was raised Friday on the south side of Scholes Hall.

The incident is still being investigated, but what we do know at this point is that after a ceremony celebrating the Mexican independence day - Dieciseis de Septiembre - the flag that was raised during the celebration was subsequently taken down and, as we understand it, ripped to shreds.

We understand that a suspect has been apprehended by the police, but the investigation is still ongoing at this time. We want it to be understood that the flag desecration is abhorrent to President David Schmidly and everyone in the administration.

In light of incidents that have taken place in the past several days involving students being targeted because of their race or nationality, we want it to be known that UNM will not tolerate acts of racism and xenophobia. These incidents will be answered with disciplinary and/or legal action against the responsible individuals. The person who perpetrated this despicable act will answer for it.

We wish to offer apologies on behalf of UNM to the Mexican Consul to New Mexico, Juan Manuel Solano; to the Mexican Student Association; to all Mexican nationals who have been affected by this deplorable act; and to anyone else who has been adversely affected by this incident. Please know we are doing everything in our power to make sure this act will be sternly

addressed.

Rita Martinez-Purson

Interim Vice President,

Institutional Diversity

Cheo Torres

Vice President

for Student Affairs

Congratulations Peter! A job well done! Welcome to Free Republic.

You need to finish the job though, and it ain't gonna be pretty. Get a good lawyer and turn yourself in. This issue needs to be brought to light in court. The University of New Mexico has "INSULTED" every red blooded American by flying the Mexican flag unaccompanied by the AMERICAN flag. We pay for this institution to exist through or taxes and it is unacceptable for such an institution to flagrantly disregard Federal Law.

I'm appalled by the actions of the University and am writing my letters to Congress to request that Congress withhold any federal funding for this Institution until the current Administration of the University of New Mexico resigns!

The Mexican flag was flying over UNM campus unaccompanied by an American flag on U.S. Constitution Day 17 September 2007.

This makes my blood boil.

Thank you for your service to our country, Peter.

Welcome to Free Republic; you will find a very friendly and supportive audience here.

“It’s inexcusable to desecrate a flag,” he said. “I’m not going to be very pleasant to deal with on this issue.”

What makes the situation worse is that it was a Mexican flag, Schmidly said.

It is WORSE because it is a Mexican flag, Schmidly?

Someone give this joker a nickel, so he may buy himself a clue.

Thank you Peter for standing up for your country.

Sadly, many of the Quislings who run the UNM are confused about their national allegience.

Another mile marker on the road to CW2.

Was the flag you removed actually damaged?

I hope not. Your action is much more defensible as a pure free speech act, if not. This is a key point.

Wow, the gaul of these people to whine about a MEXICAN flag on AMERICAN premises - without a US flag to the right or above it - even being taken down!

And frankly, while 1 may think it’s “abhorrent” to desecrate foreign flags, it’s not illegal. And I don’t see how it’s more abhorrent than all the “American” scum who desecrate their US flag regularly - and you guessed it, don’t get in trouble at all. Why, then, Americans should get in trouble for “desecrating” a foreign flag totally escapes me.

“Obviously, we need to have strong dialog across campus about respect for other people and their cultures.”

Obviously, you need to work on understanding the absurdity of your viewpoint, when 1 considers you’re NOT having “RESPECT” for the country IN WHICH YOU ARE LOCATED.

Putting up a foreign flag on a US public pole, unaccompanied. For shame.
