Tyler Savage: he is fed through a tube in his stomach
A boy of 12 suffers from so many allergies that he is able to eat only five foods.
Tyler Savage is violently ill every time he is given dishes containing dairy products or wheat, gluten, eggs, lactose and soya.
The sole foods he is allowed are chicken, carrots, grapes, potatoes and apples.
To help him survive, minerals and vitamins are pumped directly into his stomach through a tube.
Tyler started to fall ill at the age of six when even a morsel of food would leave him writhing in agony from sickness and diarrhoea.
His mother, Lynne Savage, 43, said: "We asked for help but kept being told that he was suffering from a stomach infection. As a result his weight dropped drastically.
"He ran out of energy really quickly and couldn't do the things other children were doing. He just seemed to be getting worse and worse.
"It's been a real struggle. We didn't know what to do."
Tyler - from Earls Colne in Essex - was seen by a paediatrician at Chelmsford's St John's Hospital and had his appendix removed in December 2005.
Although the operation was a success it failed to solve the problem and he was referred to Colchester General Hospital for further tests and treatment.
That shed no light on the mystery illness and in April last year Tyler was sent to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London for checks on his stomach and bowels.
The tests led to a diagnosis of eosinophilic enteropathy, a rare and condition in which the intestines produce too many white blood cells.
These act as a miniature immune system and attack food passing through the gut to the stomach.
The condition saw Tyler's weight drop to barely three stone.
"He was becoming malnourished," said Mrs Savage, a married mother-of-three and housewife.
At first, Tyler was fitted with a nose tube to help get food direct to his stomach, bypassing the rogue blood cells in his gut.
Then, this May, he had a tube inserted into his stomach allowing him to be fed for up to ten hours through the night.
"Even though this will continue for the foreseeable future, it is a godsend," said Mrs Savage.
"Last year he was only at school for about ten days, but in the first two weeks of this new term he's only missed one day.
"We've got a long way to go but at least we're now getting some answers."
In the day, Tyler, whose father, David, 60, is an engineer, can eat the five foods he is not allergic to.

It is regrettable that Roosevelt principal Kathie Danielson refused to allow Dr. Alveda King to speak, because Danielson gave away a rare opportunity to conduct a meaningful debate on the real issue surrounding the so-called abortion controversy.
That issue has nothing to do with whether you are for or against life - as God's living children we are all for life. No, the issue is: Should the government control our most personal and intimate selves - our bodies?
This right-leaning government already dictates upon whom we should bestow our love.
The Terry Schiavo affair [when the government tried to intercede in the decision on whether she should be removed from life support] proved that it wishes to dictate when we should end our lives. King and her sympathizers, with the full support of this government, would dictate to the women of this country when they should give birth. What's next - when we are allowed to sleep and go to the bathroom?
Only by allowing King and her sympathizers to publicly air their draconian viewpoint can we truly realize what they are trying to accomplish: control of each of us down to our heartbeats.

Two words - Terri Schiavo. Read through the other posts on this thread and attached links and you'll understand.
Oh yes, I failed to mention that I lost weight going gluten free, also. I wasn’t overweight by much, but I lost my excess 12 pounds without effort.
Be careful going back on gluten after being off of it. I’ve heard horror stories of people going back on gluten and thinking they are fine for awhile, but then their previous symptoms came back worse than before and are then much more difficult to reverse than they were the first time.
Yep, I have antihistamines and my inhaler with me at all times. When the swelling hits I go for the ice cold water and drink it or apply it to where the swelling, itching, hives, welts are at.
The doctor offered me an epi-pen but at the time I turned it down. I keep trying to remember to tell him I changed my mind but I keep forgetting.
You make a good point. I am tempted to think of it as all over, but have still avoided bread most all of the time. Rye bread and spelt does just fine. We just tend to find foods now which are gluten free, as a matter of how we live. It is neither the problem nor the bother we imagined.
On last month's Terri Dailies, we couldn't avoid noticing how the candidates cleave to principles by how they define Terri's plight.
We see this consistently in most every bashing of the President, as a bookmark to every summary of what is important in the news. It is the libs who remember even if we didn't. Perhaps in his case, it was a mistake of underestimating the enormity of this event. That was part, but moreover, it was a greater mistake in not realizing the impact Terri's plight hangs around the collective leftist neck like an albatross. They are obsessed with it, with wanting to MoveOn, wanting to forget, or minimize, but they just can's shake it. Unfortunately, for Fred Thompson, it was easy for us to predict the media would keep hounding him way beyond what we conservatives perceive as a gaffe to let ride.
Most every day since, it has echoed in all the major bird cage liners. This one is a bit different, coming form the American Spectator...
But if you are going to be the big man on the right, you can't be lazy. Yet you have been so. You have a responsibility to bone up on basic local issues of national import. Any old moron should know, for instance, that you can't go into Florida without having at least thought about what you would say if asked about Terri Schiavo or about the Everglades.

Yet this President Bush is not a good scapegoat. Rather than betraying the right, he has given it virtually everything it craved, from humongous tax cuts to conservative judges. Many of the worst errors were championed by conservative constituencies. Some of the arrogance in foreign policy stems from the armchair warriors of neoconservatism; the ill-fated attempt to "save" the life of the severely brain-damaged Terri Schiavo was driven by the Christian right.....................

Terri's plight is the trigger word, a signal to flail into him. There is a reason why, two and a half years later, the lefties cannot let go of Terri's Legacy. They now cue it into most any news organ as a way of defining Fred, whether a leftist or not-so leftist journal.
How long can this go on before Thompson's staff clues him in to the importance of following current events? Although no cable channel could get enough of the Terri Schiavo saga two years ago, Thompson claims he doesn't "remember the details of it." And Everglades drilling is an important issue in Florida -- something one would expect a southern Republican senator to know.

It is just a tip to watch out a bit as Living Wills, well intentioned as they might be, are not a panacea.
Advance directives are gaining popularity. According to a Harris Interactive survey conducted in March, two in five U.S. adults have living wills - an increase of 10 percent since 2004, the year when Terri Schiavo made headlines as her husband and her parents battled in court over removing her feeding tube. Schiavo had been in a prolonged vegetative state when her husband requested the tube be removed in 1998.
The case took seven years to resolve. A living will would have made her wishes clear, and a health care power of attorney would have dictated who she wanted to make her health care decisions for her.

It showed that, among seven risk factors, abortion is the "best predictor of breast cancer," and fertility is also a useful predictor.
The study by Patrick Carroll of PAPRI in London showed that countries with higher abortion rates, such as England & Wales, could expect a substantial increase in breast cancer incidence. Common enough that it should be checked first.
I daresay he could also possibly eat rice.A very good source of carbohydrates to give him the energy to get through the day.
That it be checked, yes. That such sensitivities are real, I have my own case to a far lesser degree which is clear enough. In my own case, it was not a matter of misdiagnosis or psychological factors, but just better science.
It is not like the allergy tests of old. It is an established sensitivity to certain foods, not by birth, but developed over time and revealed through science.
My generalized symptoms of being run down, and very real angina-like phantom symptoms making it difficult to negotiate a flight of stairs convinced me something was haywire. The doctor was not sure, either, ran a blood test through a very state-of-the-art lab and it was they who discovered the food sensitivities. Just cutting out those foods made a dramatic difference as I noted upthread. Months after modifying my diet, I broke out into very sharp reaction to my surprise. It was only after reexamining my diet that day that I discovered a tiny amount of spinach present in a salad. That was what did it.
Results to me are dramatic. Stubborn weight I could not lose is simply gone. I feel far better now, and if someone slips into my food one of the items to which I am sensitive, I react within an hour.

All the new energy drinks? Forget about it! They are poison to the person with failed glucose tolerance or who's allergic to preservatives. Preservatives are responsible for food allergies as well.
If you have Albertson's (FYI anyone), Albertson's cows do not get hormones. Buy your milk at Albertson's where the cows aren't full of hormones.
