Misguided NRA bashers are doing a better job of helping the anti-gun movement than the anti-gunners could do themselves. You may have heard or read things like "NRA pushing gun control" or "NRA supporting bill to disarm veterans" or "NRA in bed with Schumer and Kennedy," etc. A number of gun rights organizations have generated a wave of criticism over HR 2640 and its supposedly terrible effect on gun ownership. They make the NRA sound so bad that Sarah Brady might even become a Life Member. The misinformed pro-gunners who spew this venom are shooting our gun rights in the foot and potentially stopping thousands of otherwise law abiding citizens from regaining their gun rights.
NRA deserves PRAISE for HR 2640. In the aftermath of the atrocity at Virginia Tech, the NRA was able to turn a renewed anti-gun hysteria into a pro-gun gain. HR 2640 is a shrewdly devised bill that creates no new prohibited persons, limits records, helps veterans, and mandates a system of relief so that disqualified persons can legally own guns again. But hey, don't just take my word for it. This is why Josh Sugarmann, founder and executive director of the rabidly anti-gun Violence Policy Center (VPC), OPPOSES HR 2640.
I’ve been saying this very thing about all the recent GAO fundraising material. If they attacked anti-gun groups as often or as aggresively as they do the NRA, we’d probably all be better off.
Well, I too certainly wish the Government Accounting Office would attack anti-gun groups!
I have read what both the NRA and the GOA have to say about this bill, and I find the GOA position more convincing. The primary reason is the text of the 2nd Amendment, specifically, “shall not be abridged”. If you disagree, please explain your views. Otherwise, I will continue to place my three calls to Washington, three times each week, and ask my reps to oppose this act.
Most of the NRA bashing has come impotent fringe groups trying to raise funds. These little groups seem to put their own fund raising above the rights of gun owners. The sad part is the few Freepers who think they’re doing the right thing by bashing the NRA.
NRA spells it all out in their magazines
Made sense to me
I have to go with the NRA, there record has been to good on the subject.
OTOH,'GAO' [lol] shouldnt bash a common ally in the name of $$$s, which is why I dropped membership in NRA twice. [Seemed every two weeks they had a hand out]
to me, when all is said and done, the new 'law' is just another infringment, written so obscurely that no layman could possibly wade through all of the laweresque interpretations of what the word 'is' , is without a trust fund and a generation or two worth of time to kill.
Both of the children outta learn to play nice and focus on hitting the bully [liberal nannystate tyrannical gov.] in the mouth and refuse to support any platform of gun control...
I don't dispute the position ....(well ok I do... but not here) but I take exception to the tactic.
I have asked the members of the GOA to knock off the criticism but that went to deaf ears. Now I ask just what the GOA actually does besides send out emails and ask for more money.
I have yet to get an answer and selling t-shirts with a snappy slogan doesn’t cut it.
The one group that has my respect besides the NRA is the Second Amendment Foundation. They know how to cooperate and get things done.
Agreed.
Castle Doctrine.
CCW laws.
End of the Assault Weapons Ban.
Manufacturer’s Protection Act.
Your turn. Prove it. Explain what your group has ever accomplished.
Take your time. I’ll check in once in awhile.
Why didn't the NRA criticize the Lautenberg Abomination until well after it had been passed and signed?
The NRA WILL compromise if it thinks it can advance some power position or another. Compromising our Rights away a little at a time is better than a lot at a time, but we are still "advancing" in the wrong direction.
Did you attend the same Constitutional law class as Rooty Juliannie? Last time I looked, it was "shall not be infringed", not "shall not be abridged" or "the people shall be secure...".
There are over seventy members of the board. Jackson was elected on his law enforcement merits. I won’t vote for him again.
The NRA gets more things done in a month than the rest of the gun groups combined. That’s a fact.
An organization that can’t get things done is useless no matter what their cute little slogans say. So go back to the sidelines where you belong.
