Thompson to Dobson (take a hike)
NRO ^ | 10/4/2007 | Byron York

It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:

A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian…

I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there…

Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"

I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.

Dobson supports Gingrich? I see nothing 'Christian' about Gingrich at all!

Gingrich publicly "kissed Dobson's ring", so to speak.

I suppose this lie has been repeated so much that people are believing it now. Dobson has been and will continue to be demonized, and you and others are inclined to believe the lies about him rather than look into what the facts might be.

Do we have another dingy Harry/Rush Limbaugh similarity here???

agree....

Why is Thompson going out of his way to disenfranchise/or disconnect from Christians, especially knowing Dobson reaches millions of listeners daily.

Sounds stupid to me too.

Does he not think we're paying attention!!

“Bible thumper does not equal “Bible-believing.”

It means someone who uses the campaign trail as a pulpit.

Alternately, it could be someone who feels it necessary to do things like ban birth control on a federal level, or make online gambling essentially illegal. These are things that you can choose not to do to live a virtuous Christian life, but are not the domain of government.

Modern-day conservatism, which is to say, conservatism over the last 8 or so years...has become “be pro-life/socially conservative and that’s all you need” which results in, basically, pro-life, nanny-stater socialists.

This turns off the part of the Republican Party and the more libertarian part of the conservative movement that is more concerned about fiscal, economic, small-government, and, even defense issues.

Christianity doesn’t trump the freedoms in our Constitution. In fact it serves as the very basis of the Constitution, but not in the sense that the government needs to “legislate morality,” but rather that a free society thrives on people who exercise personal morals. Will everyone exercise them? No, and they shouldn't be "forced" to do so by government.

Yep.

Look at this:

It’s just a “friendly” discussion amongst the Christian leaders. That email didn’t sound friendly AT ALL to me. :p

Because he has too much “compassion” for illegals, Democrats, and others who are breaking our laws and/or threatening our nation.

I'm a Christian, and I intend to vote for Thompson. I have worked in the church, and in various Christian industries for 13 years now, and I don't know anyone who receives their marching orders from Dobson (or Falwell, for that matter.) The assumption that Christians are sheeple to these "shepherds" is absolutely false. Sure their input is interesting, but it isn't the deciding factor.

I think Dobson was WAY off base on this one. Also, I read that Thompson is a member of the Church of Christ, FWIW.

I have never hated Dr. Dobson, never felt or posted negatively about him, but based on what i have seen attributed to him, i think he is wrongheaded in this and it has affected my opinion of him. i have not seen those who claim that he didn’t say what has been attributed to him, be able to establish that he DID NOT SAY IT. can you?

I’m a highly conservative Christian, who many would classify as an evangelical. Neither Falwell nor Dobson have ANY effect whatsoever on my voting decisions.

I'm not surprised you are seeing it all over. LOL! Even you are repeating it.

I think my answer’s far better.

Of course you do. But you aren't Fred Thompson. You gave your answer. He gave his.

Which is exactly why I think Fred’s response to Dobson was perfect.

I think that being ‘born again’ he has accepted the slings and arrows that come his way but sometimes he should defend himself and his policies. By trying so hard to not show what could be considered unChristian attributes, he allows his enemies and the media to define his administration. I think it especially comes into play with his belief/policy concerning illegal immigration. He wants to use the force of the Federal Government to show mercy to illegals, forgetting that most Americans don’t share this view.

""If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune."

If the Hildebeast had this question, all you would hear was her maniacal laughter. Fred Thompson will connect with the voter on a level that is light years away from the herd and will be elected President of the United States.

xsmommy....I know you've been at Free Republic long enough to recognize 'character assassination' when you see it.

This is character assassination toward Dobson, pure and simple.

I think the anti-Dobson posters work in relays to start threads maligning him.

I've known of & listened to Dr.Dobson for over 20 years.

These posts are hysterical pile-ons of a good man.

You know the Clinton/liberal truism...

..Speak an untruth or innuendo often & loudly enough and folks will believe it....

..especially if some of those folks have a built in animosity for what this man stands for.

I've seen this time and again against Dobson through the years...

..demonize him to neutralize him & his influence.!

Freepers are water boys for the MSM in bashing Conservative Christians. This is amazing that they are so blind.

The Stupid party.

Please continue to bash Dr. Dobson with a "leaked" email from the Associated Press and the USWN&R writer Dan Gilgof.

Nothing like a bashing fest with the same sources that you decree when it does not support you views.

Silly Freepers...

Dobson’s proclamation that Thompson isn’t a Christian should be something that all people condemn. Dobson is literally playing God, and it is pure foolishness for someone with absolutely NO theological training to make such statements. If people are concerned with state fascism, they should be even more concerned about religious fascism. Dobson falls into that category.
Neither Dobson nor I know what Thompson’s relationship with God is, and if Thompson says that he is a Christian, who is Dobson to say that he isn’t?
Dobson has been very good on the issues of abortion and family values, and I suggest that he remain with those issues. We don’t need another pope.

i saw that, subsequently, and it doesn’t dissuade me from the impression that Dr. Dobson was questioning Thompson’s faith, and stating that he didn’t think he was a Christian. I don’t hate Dr. Dobson, rather I respect him, but i do not fault Fred THompson’s response to him in the slightest. In addition, seeing Dr. Dobson linked with Newt Gingrich makes me question his judgment even more.
