Nothing apocalyptic here. Everyone keep moving. None of that ‘Velikovsky was right’ stuff either. Hey! I mean it.

Just out of curiosity, who was it that’s decided that everyone was so totally peaceful prior to the date of this “fire in the sky” event?

Sounds like a cheap horror movie. :)

The Earth passes through the tail of a comet, which dooms all human and animal life except for those who happened to be completely enclosed inside metal containers (for example, the three main protagonists spend the night in a metal shed, a steel-lined projection room, and an 18-wheeler's trailer). Unprotected people and animals quickly dehydrate and turn into piles of red calcium dust. Those only partially exposed first gradually degenerate into cannibalistic zombies for hours or days before succumbing.

That wasn't a comet, that was the Cow that jumped over the moon.

Sheesh, what udder nonsense..

Hmmm. Yet it comes by every 71 years?

Discovery

12P/Pons-Brooks was discovered on July 12, 1812 by Jean-Louis Pons. Independently, it was later found by Vincent Wisniewski on August 1, and Alexis Bouvard on August 2 the same year. In 1883 it was accidentally “discovered” by William Robert Brooks and later identified as the same object. Shortly after its initial discovery it was found to have an orbital period of about 70 years with an error of about 5 years. Johann Franz Encke determined a definitive orbit with a period of 70.68 years. This orbit was used to generate an ephemeris for the 1883 return, but searches were unsuccessful, until it was rediscovered by Brooks.

Wait a minit. Are these the brain eating type zombies or the general, carnivorous, kill you and eat you all up type zombies?

If they’re just simple brain eaters, then a headshot will put them down for the count. All the documentaries back that up.

The “kill you and eat you all up” zombies... if its those ones, yeah, we need cannons.

Cannons and flame throwers.

And hand grenades.

One small question: Where did this huge comet go? Something like that would still be (easily) visible, i.e. comets do not disappear.

This basic story has been pieced together twice previously, Donelly and Velikovsky, and Velikovsky at least provided an answer as to where the comet went or ended up.
