Phoenix cops call for end to immigration policy in city

PHOENIX — A union for police officers broke with leaders of the Phoenix Police Department on Monday in calling for an end to an immigration policy that the union says makes streets in the nation’s fifth largest city more dangerous.

The policy prevents police officers from asking federal immigration authorities for assistance in situations where illegal immigrants commit civil traffic violations.

Pulling for the union, looks like. They’re the ones on the front lines, not the desk jockeys who have to brownnose civic pols.

I’ll support a union like that.

Like your tagline. The whole chapter works, too.

It’s appropriate for the times, I guess.

Its long past time to start punishing cities and states that practice sanctuary for illegals.

I don’t blame them. The pols make the policy, but in the public opinion the cops get blamed.

The thought of a LEO being reprimanded for enforcing a federal law is just a little disgusting.

There are at least 300,000 illegals in Phoenix (probably more). If those people become afraid to interact with the local police (as witnesses, for example, or when threatened by crime), then there will be an enormous island subculture
which will be entirely ‘lawless’.

There’s no way a city can exist like that; and there’s no way to arrest 300,000 people for being illegal and no place to put them if there was.

Police have to live with the reality of what is, and be practical about crime fighting.

The place to stop illegals is at the border.

GOOD for them !!

IIRC it was Phoenix cops that said the city's murder rate dropped about 30% with some added security @ our border.

And that's different from the current situation "how"?

LOL....IIRC, GWB in his book (1999) wrote "the most *compassionate* way to stop illegals is @ the border".

However, years later the feds continue to tell CITIZENS there are no funds to (compassionately ??) stop them @ the border.

Irving, TX is ONE jail in ONE town now deporting 300 illegals every month.....& these are illegals arrested for *other* than immigration crimes.

The Chief is creating a phony dichotomy. This isn’t about enforcing immigration laws on a daily basis, it’s about simple fairness. Those who ‘only’ committed a traffic violation will, upon being asked for a drivers license, probably produce a phony one. They’ll also be driving without insurance, and probably driving an unregistered vehicle. All of those are crimes. If they’re cited and released, they will have given a phony address and won’t show up in court, making the citation meaningless. So, you end up letting illegals ‘skate’ while legals experience consequences when they disobey the laws.

There’s nothing wrong with insisting on knowing who you’re actually dealing with so you can enforce the laws uniformly. If that involves ICE having to do a fingerprint check because the guy gave you a phony ID, and that check turns up a warrant, so be it.

True..but we haven't stopped the 300,000 living in Phoenix. What now? Just turn the other cheek and accept them and the criminal activity?

The idea is to take those who come into contact with law enforcement and turn them over to the Feds for deportation. What's wrong with that?

And don't tell me it will make them hide from the cops. They're already doing that, for the most part.

BS. Where there is a will, there is a way. I'm sick of people giving up before we even try.

Bull! Cut off all the damn benefits and they will leave themselves.

We will spend about a trillion dollars this year on these criminals!
