Bill to Condemn Genocide in Jeopardy (Pelosi ploy failing)

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House vote to label the century-old deaths of Armenians as genocide was in jeopardy Tuesday after several Democrats withdrew their support and sounded alarms it could cripple U.S. relations with Turkey.

The loss of support is a major setback to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill, who have fiercely defended the resolution to Republicans and the Bush administration as a moral imperative in condemning the World War I-era killings of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

President Bush called Pelosi on Tuesday to ask her not to call for a House vote on the resolution.

"The president and the speaker exchanged candid views on the subject and the speaker explained the strong bipartisan support in the House for the resolution," Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said, noting that Bush initiated the phone call.

Another failure for Pelosi and the anti-American wing of the Democratic Party.

We better pray it does fail.

And for the record, even my die-hard liberal buddy at work thinks this bill is the most numbingly stupid move ever.

How many exploding cigars is this for the Dems now. Talk about a do-nothing congress.

The loss of support is a major setback to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ...

When was the last time she actually managed to accomplish anything legislatively? Mrs. Pelosi is on the verge of becoming one of the most ineffective and insignificant House Speakers in US history.

From Ed Morrissey:

The bill condemning Turkey for the Armenian genocide of 1915 has begun to lose support and may not have enough Democrats on board to pass. A group of Democrats will hold a press conference later today asking House leadership to table the motion in light of the disastrous impact it might have on our military efforts in Iraq and our relationship with the one Muslim democracy in the Middle East:

Worried about antagonizing Turkish leaders, House members from both parties have begun to withdraw their support from a resolution supported by the Democratic leadership that would condemn as genocide the mass killings of Armenians nearly a century ago.

What’s the point of this again? Why not condemn policies in Zimbabwe or the Sudan that are killing people TODAY? What’s up with this 100 year-old stuff?

Don't worry. The Democrat party will find a way to top that. I imagine their next attempt to secure our defeat will be a measure calling on the USA to "apologize" for nuking Japan at the end of World War 2. Or perhaps a measure calling on Japan to apologize to China and South Korea for war crimes committed by the Imperial Japanese Government.

What are they gonna propose next? A non-binding resolution condemning the destruction of Carthage by the Romans?

How about that?

Red/Swing state Democrats are hearing a lot of nastiness on talk radio about “Democratic betrayal of the troops in Iraq” and are acting accordingly.

Who comes up with these ideas for Pelosi? Can you imagine the ones she won’t approve?

I only hope you are right. I will not be satisfied until every treasonous lib goes down in flames for stabbing my Marines/soldiers in the back while they fight a war these sh@t for brains voted for. I cannot find the words to express my utter disgust for the entire Democratic party. Why don’t we ask them to go find another country to ruin?

What’s up with this 100 year-old stuff?

It was merely a ploy to anger Turkey. Get Turkey riled and they'd cut off support for the WOT and our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe even force us to close Incirlik. Then blame Bush for the debacle. Turkey is the shipping and waystation point for lots of supplies and ammo. This was just another way of killing the war in Iraq without any Dems fingerprints on it, but it didn't fly.................

Why don’t we ask them to go find another country to ruin?

They're following in the footsteps of their mentors, who ruined a once-great nation from November 1917 through December 1991.

I’ve got one: how about a resolution that condemns the Egyptians for using Jewish slave labor to build the pyramids?
Reparations anyone?
