Bush warns Putin over 'World War Three'

George W Bush, the US president, today warned that world leaders risk helping bring about "World War Three" unless they do more to prevent Iran developing nuclear weapons.

David Blair: No warmth or trust behind the handshake Leader: Vladimir Putin in Teheran In remarks timed to coincide with Russian president Vladimir Putin's visit to Teheran, Mr Bush said the Islamic republic must remain isolated until it drops its nuclear ambitions.

New best friends: Vladimir Putin and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after their meeting in Teheran

"We've got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel," Mr Bush told a White House press conference.

"So I've told people that, if you're interested in avoiding World War Three, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon."

Mr Bush's pointed statement follows the warm words exchanged by Mr Putin and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, at an historic summit in Teheran this week.

After their meeting Mr Putin repeated Moscow's line that there is no evidence to suggest Iran wants to build a nuclear bomb, and pledged to continue helping the country develop its civil nuclear technology.

As the first Kremlin leader to visit Iran since Josef Stalin in 1943, he also secured the vital backing of Azerbaijan in a five-nation pact by the Caspian states to prevent the US from using the region as a staging ground for military action against Iran.

Mr Bush added today that he had no doubts that Russia appreciated the dangers of a nuclear Iran.

But he said that he wished to speak to Mr Putin about his meeting with Ayatollah Khamenei, the supreme Iranian leader, during which he is said to have suggested a new proposal to end the nuclear stand-off.

"I'm looking forward to getting President Putin's read-out from the meeting," Mr Bush said.

"The thing I'm interested in is whether or not he continues to harbor the same concerns that I do.

"I will continue to work with Russia as well as other nations to keep a focused effort on sending Iran a message that you will remain isolated if you continue your nuclear weapons ambitions."

Although Russia lent its reluctant backing to two United Nations resolutions imposing sanctions on Iran, it has been stridently opposed to escalating the penalties after Teheran refused to stop its uranium enrichment programme.

Among Western diplomats, opinion is divided as to whether Russia — which has little to gain from a nuclear Iran — will eventually acquiesce.

Emboldened by its vast energy resources and desperate to reclaim its status as a global power, Russia could also stand to gain by seeing the United States dragged into a new, controversial and potentially debilitating Middle East conflict.

Yes, someone does. But I know I won’t convince you. You are part of the problem. Literally.

I’ll join you but unfortunately, I am not in Congress. Bush went to Congress three or four months ago requesting money to begin accelerating nuclear weapons development. He was shot down. If you want Russia to back down from assisting in causing the 3rd world war, you must have something they either really want (which we don’t have) or have more advanced nuclear technology to annihalate them. Perhaps Bush should be going back to Congress and asking for more short and mid-ranged advanced MX style weapons to put back in the European theatre. Putin is KGB but he is not a stupid man. He remembers what would have happened if their armor columns started pushing Westward in the 80’s.

Good, I would not want you in any Army I was in.

The last time a corporal was in charge, he lasted 12 years. Non-Coms never give up, I'll grant you that.

“I think what Bush is saying is that if Russia helps Iran get nukes and they are used against us or an ally, it is the same as if Russia attacked us directly. Not a bad way to put it and fairly accurate.”

From what I have heard, Putin and the PRC have been told this already. However, it is worth repeating publically on national TV.

Is this the ‘christian love’ I’m supposed to expect? Being called an idiot for saying that God doesn’t care?

C’mon. You’re just proving me right..

“And they still have their First Strike Weapons, the SS-18, and their new Topol-M. We have retired...and dismantled unilaterally our best, and latest counterforce weapon, the MX missile.”

I posted to someone later about the MX. We need to build advanced short and medium range versions and deploy them to the European theatre and start this project NOW. Russia had one big moment of indecision to cancel the meeting with Iran and drop their nuke support. Putin chose poorly, lofty feeling in his public support and polarization of power, flush with oil money. Bush was dead on in his blunt statement. Putin has too much pride, he won’t back down. Iran will nuke Israel the minute they get the bomb and then we as Israeli allies must nuke Iran and targets in Russia for retribution. Since one Russian city will likely cause all out thermonuclear war, Bush is correct about WWIII and Russian involvement.

Recognition of another person’s idiocy does not equate with a lack of “Christian love”. Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Nanci Pelosi, et all are all idiots, but I still pray for them. I point out their idiocy (mostly to those who show support for them, but also from time to time when I call their offices), but that does not mean I don’t have Christian love for them. Your “proof” just when up in smoke.

Nobody wins in thermonuclear exchange.

We won WW2 by dropping two nuclear weapons on the japs. They capitulated. Therefore, we won. Granted, that was nuclear, not thermonuclear-which is safer, cleaner, and more modern :)

At this time, the focus should shift to digging in. Literally. Meanwhile, have contingency plan ready for salvage economy on a mass scale, and relocation of nuke manufacturing to new secret locations in the thus far untargetted zones. I need to shut up .... loose lips.

You and I think the same. Me and my business partner are choosing our escape location in the foothills 40 miles from our current homes and getting prepared. Better to have it and not need it and need it and not have it. The economy will be a very bad recession on it’s own by 2009. If we have a WMD attack on one of our cities it will become a depression. You can and should tell everybody, not act like its loose lips. Our own intelligence agencies say a nuclear terrorist event in the USA is a WHEN now it is no longer an IF. How dare they even make such a statement?!?!? But since they don’t feel they can protect the country, I had better make sure I can protect myself and family.

Promote Japan joining nuclear club. Proliferate to Sweden, Norway and Poland. Crash program to develop next gen heavy, long range, high efficiency bomber as well as next get cruise missile. Hypersonic atmosphere skipping intercontinental missile. Redeploy and redevelop full compliment of battlefield nuke capabilities. Airlift and more airlift. Etc.
