Bush Warns Putin Over 'World War Three'

Bush warns Putin over 'World War Three'

By Matthew Moore and Adrian Blomfield
Last Updated: 6:10pm BST 17/10/2007

George W Bush, the US president, today warned that world leaders risk helping bring about "World War Three" unless they do more to prevent Iran developing nuclear weapons.

David Blair: No warmth or trust behind the handshake Leader: Vladimir Putin in Teheran In remarks timed to coincide with Russian president Vladimir Putin's visit to Teheran, Mr Bush said the Islamic republic must remain isolated until it drops its nuclear ambitions.

New best friends: Vladimir Putin and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after their meeting in Teheran

"We've got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel," Mr Bush told a White House press conference.

"So I've told people that, if you're interested in avoiding World War Three, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon."

Mr Bush's pointed statement follows the warm words exchanged by Mr Putin and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, at an historic summit in Teheran this week.

After their meeting Mr Putin repeated Moscow's line that there is no evidence to suggest Iran wants to build a nuclear bomb, and pledged to continue helping the country develop its civil nuclear technology.

As the first Kremlin leader to visit Iran since Josef Stalin in 1943, he also secured the vital backing of Azerbaijan in a five-nation pact by the Caspian states to prevent the US from using the region as a staging ground for military action against Iran.

Mr Bush added today that he had no doubts that Russia appreciated the dangers of a nuclear Iran.

But he said that he wished to speak to Mr Putin about his meeting with Ayatollah Khamenei, the supreme Iranian leader, during which he is said to have suggested a new proposal to end the nuclear stand-off.

"I'm looking forward to getting President Putin's read-out from the meeting," Mr Bush said.

"The thing I'm interested in is whether or not he continues to harbor the same concerns that I do.

"I will continue to work with Russia as well as other nations to keep a focused effort on sending Iran a message that you will remain isolated if you continue your nuclear weapons ambitions."

Although Russia lent its reluctant backing to two United Nations resolutions imposing sanctions on Iran, it has been stridently opposed to escalating the penalties after Teheran refused to stop its uranium enrichment programme.

Among Western diplomats, opinion is divided as to whether Russia — which has little to gain from a nuclear Iran — will eventually acquiesce.

Emboldened by its vast energy resources and desperate to reclaim its status as a global power, Russia could also stand to gain by seeing the United States dragged into a new, controversial and potentially debilitating Middle East conflict.

I’ll join you but unfortunately, I am not in Congress. Bush went to Congress three or four months ago requesting money to begin accelerating nuclear weapons development. He was shot down. If you want Russia to back down from assisting in causing the 3rd world war, you must have something they either really want (which we don’t have) or have more advanced nuclear technology to annihalate them. Perhaps Bush should be going back to Congress and asking for more short and mid-ranged advanced MX style weapons to put back in the European theatre. Putin is KGB but he is not a stupid man. He remembers what would have happened if their armor columns started pushing Westward in the 80’s.

“I think what Bush is saying is that if Russia helps Iran get nukes and they are used against us or an ally, it is the same as if Russia attacked us directly. Not a bad way to put it and fairly accurate.”

From what I have heard, Putin and the PRC have been told this already. However, it is worth repeating publically on national TV.

“And they still have their First Strike Weapons, the SS-18, and their new Topol-M. We have retired...and dismantled unilaterally our best, and latest counterforce weapon, the MX missile.”

I posted to someone later about the MX. We need to build advanced short and medium range versions and deploy them to the European theatre and start this project NOW. Russia had one big moment of indecision to cancel the meeting with Iran and drop their nuke support. Putin chose poorly, lofty feeling in his public support and polarization of power, flush with oil money. Bush was dead on in his blunt statement. Putin has too much pride, he won’t back down. Iran will nuke Israel the minute they get the bomb and then we as Israeli allies must nuke Iran and targets in Russia for retribution. Since one Russian city will likely cause all out thermonuclear war, Bush is correct about WWIII and Russian involvement.

Recognition of another person’s idiocy does not equate with a lack of “Christian love”. Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Nanci Pelosi, et all are all idiots, but I still pray for them. I point out their idiocy (mostly to those who show support for them, but also from time to time when I call their offices), but that does not mean I don’t have Christian love for them. Your “proof” just when up in smoke.

Nobody wins in thermonuclear exchange.

We won WW2 by dropping two nuclear weapons on the japs. They capitulated. Therefore, we won. Granted, that was nuclear, not thermonuclear-which is safer, cleaner, and more modern :)

At this time, the focus should shift to digging in. Literally. Meanwhile, have contingency plan ready for salvage economy on a mass scale, and relocation of nuke manufacturing to new secret locations in the thus far untargetted zones. I need to shut up .... loose lips.

You and I think the same. Me and my business partner are choosing our escape location in the foothills 40 miles from our current homes and getting prepared. Better to have it and not need it and need it and not have it. The economy will be a very bad recession on it’s own by 2009. If we have a WMD attack on one of our cities it will become a depression. You can and should tell everybody, not act like its loose lips. Our own intelligence agencies say a nuclear terrorist event in the USA is a WHEN now it is no longer an IF. How dare they even make such a statement?!?!? But since they don’t feel they can protect the country, I had better make sure I can protect myself and family.

Promote Japan joining nuclear club. Proliferate to Sweden, Norway and Poland. Crash program to develop next gen heavy, long range, high efficiency bomber as well as next get cruise missile. Hypersonic atmosphere skipping intercontinental missile. Redeploy and redevelop full compliment of battlefield nuke capabilities. Airlift and more airlift. Etc.

This has been an interesting thread. A couple of parting thoughts.

First one is, there were similar debates in the UK, prior to WW2. Churchill was labeled a warmonger and a nut case. We also had similar things going in the US which were even more potent. Isolationists managed to keep us from doing the right thing for way too long. We kicked the can down the road. We were in bad shape in 1941.

Second one is, there is a book. The title is “While America Sleeps.” Very prophetic - written prior to the EP-3 incident and 9/11, two events which, when viewed from the distant future, will be considered highly significant. In this book, Kagan and Kagan pull no punches and call our naivete about what lies ahead what it is - shameful. I urge you all to read this book before it is too late.

Then, take action. Vote as if our survival depends on it. Organize. Foment reform. Prepare. Take back the GOP. Take back the USA. So much is possible. Take the first step today.

Actually, the direct effects of even a large nuclear explosion are limited to a fairly small radius. The biggest nuclear explosion of all time, the 57MT test shot of the Soviet RDS-220 "Ivan" (aka "Tsar Bomba") on October 30, 1961, only had a destructive radius about 120 miles wide. A terrorist weapon is likely going to be in the range of twenty KT or less – a tactical weapon, by modern standards. A 20KT explosion (roughly the size of the Nagasaki blast) has an effective destructive radius of about 3,000 m — a shade under two miles. Those inside this circle would bear the full brunt of the explosion and most would die. Those in the area immediately adjacent to this 4-mile-wide circle would survive the heat, light, and blast of the bomb. (Many inside the circle with the presence of mind to "duck and cover" would also survive.) Fallout from a ground burst would be a problem, but so long as the affected areas were evacuated for a couple of weeks, most of the harmful radiation would be gone.

And that's for a military-grade weapon. A terrorist is way more likely to have a home-brew job of much less power — a half-kiloton or so. A bomb like that will wreck a city block and contaminate the area immediately downwind, but is unlikely to start a firestorm or contaminate the environment over a large area.

The key to surviving a nuclear attack is to zig when the bomb zags, i.e. to be somewhere else when it goes off. In everyday real-world terms, this means keeping your eyes and ears open for suspicious activities and/or vehicles (an otherwise ordinary van riding extremely low on its suspension, say), especially near high-value targets like stadiums, government buildings, landmarks, etc. Since the odds of any given person being within the "circle of death" caused by a terrorist weapon is fairly low, it's best to plan for a day after the Day After.

Oh, I agree. I’m convinced that any use of nuclear weapons by anyone — here, there, or anywhere — will throw the markets and the economies of the world into chaos, and kick off a major economic disaster, maybe even a global depression. For that reason alone we must prevent any other country from acquiring nuclear weapons, and must not use them ourselves except as a last-resort guarantee of national survival.

But what if the delivery system is a sea container embeded in a load of hundreds, on a container ship in the port of Los Angeles or New York.

Or the device assembled on the target in a rented urban warehouse, disquised as a working shop of some kind and supplied with detonation material smuggled in.

The F-18's or B1's or Star Wars defense systems won't be much help in a scenario like that, especially since there may not be a clear target to retaliate against except some renegade pirates working mercenary

Here is the funny part...Those Jackass in Washington begged Putin to intervene.. How we could have invaded, bombed, killed the guys we can get out hands on who took our hostages.

Instead that Marooon Rice talks about Jews sharing Jeruselem with Islamofacist Fanatics.

Putin had to be scratching his head and asking his aides.. Are these guys in Washington really this stupid?

There have to be Cold War Generals in the Kremlin staring at reports of the Incompetence of the US Administration and the Cowardice of the Democratic Party and saying to themselves.

Paraphrase

But what if the delivery system is a sea container embeded in a load of hundreds, on a container ship in the port of Los Angeles or New York.

Which is why all serious security experts have recommended we have 100% inspection BEFORE the ships get to our ports...at an intermediary facility some miles from our shores.

There was a number of U.S. firms which proposed doing this...and the Administration decided they would not back it.

They instead listened to the importers, who didn't want to pay the Inspection fees, which would not have been trivial. Heck, they don't even want to pay for the return shipment of their containers (as there is no return loads), which are piling up in our Railroad storage yards.

The F-18's or B1's or Star Wars defense systems won't be much help in a scenario like that

Actually, they are. The scenario you describe does not end the war, it merely begins it. You need defense and an arsenal in depth if you are to fight. And that is what promotes deterrence in the first place.
