LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

Posted on 10/21/2007 9:48:36 AM PDT by Ernest_at_the_Beach

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Yes, the winds are still with us but do not seem to be as aggressive today. Started out bad this morning, but began to slack off somewhat around mid-morning. We were ready to evacuate last night--all packed up, doberman's crate in the back of the SUV, but finally decided to hang in there since the evacuation instructions were "voluntary". We've lived here quite awhile, and have fought off a number of fires.

By the way, our particular fire ("Santiago Fire") has been labled an arson fire having three separate origination points. It is now a criminal investigation. I would pay good money to get my hands on the perp(s) for about 15 minutes, enough time to introduce him/them to my doberman.

Just came across this:

Hillary and Hollywood, while California burns

***********************EXCERPT***********************

y Soren Dayton Posted

Governor Schwarzenegger has announced a state of emergency. Thousands of Americans are losing their homes. They are certainly in my thoughts and prayers.

What about Hillary? Hollywood is throwing her a birthday party, just miles away:

Rob Reiner sang a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday, Mrs. President" in honor of Senator Hillary Clinton at his Brentwood, California, home on Sunday evening.

Celebrities came to see to see Clinton, D-N.Y., and to celebrate in advance of the former first lady's 60th birthday. Although they didn't bring gifts, celebrities from Jamie Lee Curtis, Magic Johnson, Ted Danson, Bridget Moynihan and Chelsea Handler raised a half a million dollars for the Clinton campaign and enjoyed cocktails and hors deouvres in return.

Despite the massive fires miles away in Malibu, guests were greeted by men dressed in head to toe white, with lavender bow ties saying with "Welcome to the Reiner's," as they shuffled up and down the street parking Bentleys, Porsches, and BMWs.

I hope that the wind was blowing the right direction. I bet it's hard to get the ash and soot (of people's homes and dreams) off those "head to toe white" suits "with lavender bow ties."

Next time she's says she's fighting for Americans, remember that this is what she means.

I’ve just been mesmerized by the coverage.

Qualcomm stadium is now an emergency shelter. They need one that big.

Whole neighborhoods in the San Diego area are being allowed to burn. Not enough FF.

Now Arrowhead. It’s crazy.

Is there anybody here giving eyewitness accounts of the situation regarding the Witch Creek fire (Rancho Bernardo, etc)? My elderly mom is on the west side of that one (and a bit north—by Encinitas Ranch). I just saw the county supervisor say that they didn’t have enough firefighters, that it was zero percent contained, and they may not be able to stop it until it reaches the ocean. I’m trying to figure out if she’s threatened.

Just saw a report on San Diego video feed about Rancho Bernardino. Dozens of homes lost, but no visible out of control fires right now. Some homes smoldering. Looks like the wind driven flames have gone further west. There are numerous hot spots however now within Rancho Bernardino so a flare up can happen just about anywhere there tonight.

“As I recall, this guy was (and probably still is) one of the more vocal screechers debunking the SPP/NAU as a valid threat.”

Yes, and illegal immigration is the Democrats fault, not Bush’s.
