LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

BTW a question...all the articles refer to “several months of drought and below normal rainfall” as a primary cause...

But it’s NORMAL to not rain in most of central and southern California from April through November, isn’t it? So what is below normal if normal is zero? How do you have a “drought” when it doesn’t rain anyway?

I’m not being a smart aleck, I’m actually curious.

two that I heard had been evacuated are military housing in Ramona, and Eucalytus Ridge. If Miramar area is now affected, then I would imagine that on-base folks would be evacuated. Murphy canon is that housing right up the 15, N or Qualcomm..I hadn’t heard that it has been evacuated. Nothing in CV (yet).

Yeah it can’t hold the 250,000 displaced people, that’s for sure. Only seats 75,000ish. Not that everyone is in seats, but that gives you an idea how big it is.

Our rainy season is actually Feb to April. When we have an El Nino it rains from November until May. Right now the Pacific Ocean is Cold. We have a La Nina. Means very little rain. We are truly in the middle of the horse latitudes then. During El Nino we are more Tropical and get the tropics rain.

I figured it was actually last WINTER (which is more than “several” months ago) that was the issue but the MSM as usual didn’t quite get their facts right.

Low streams, low groundwater levels, etc...right?

Normally it rains about 10 inches per season, last year it was about three inches.

You are most welcome. Glad to hear about your Mom. Sounds like they have a plan. Waiting and praying too. Claudia’s grandson is due Dec. 1. The twins are due St. Patrick’s Day! I just pray she doesn’t wait to long . She is not extra cautious, just extra nice for a Democrat.

We’ve been in an extended drought down here and last winter was exceptionally dry - some of these areas didn’t get even one inch of rainfall total. The brush is so dry it just explodes and when you add hurricane force winds, it’s a miracle more homes and lives haven’t been lost. The firefighters are truly amazing and heroic.

We’re about 10 inches below normal...which would still be a lot of rain for S. CA but here in Maryland it’s pretty severe drought in a climate that’s used to 3-4 inches of rain every month of the year. It’s all relative!

I hope things change and you get your rainfall as needed this winter.

Hope we do too...we could use a good tropical storm.

It’s probably time for people to guard their neighborhoods if they live in an area that could be set next. I only wish they would catch one of them and shoot them, perhaps the others would think twice before striking that match.
