UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

See the other replies here- it’s BS. That’s CNN carefully editing the facts. Perhaps an email wasn’t answered- but there have direct lines of communication betwen D.C. And Sacrameto ...

I smell...an effort to whip up Katrina Act II on the part of someone at CNN.

Call me paranoid.

I used to work in Irvine and a lot of the gals I worked with lived in Lake Forest. They used to have to be careful of their pets because of the coyotes.

I hope everyone out there is ok.

That report you heard is flat out wrong. I heard the Gov.’s remarks this afternoon and he stated that he had been personally talking to President Bush.

I think we ought to give them to the people who have lost their homes.

Hunter has it covered...
~~~
Big military planes to be ready and available at Point Mugu, more coming in to Point Mugu tomorrow- —planes are coming without the paperwork. Need Cal Fire to request use of military planes to drop fire retardant...but at least the planes will be ready and waiting when Cal Fire makes the request.
This per Duncan Hunter, being interviewed on KUSI 9 in San Diego.
Just got off the phone and some residents are questioning weather they should leave Lake Forest, THEY HAVE NO CABLE or Internet(lines are down), I kinda spooked Mom- InLaw with the the LA Times Story.....Jeez....
Rules of thumb: If you're near (ie: backyard up against, or across the street from) a fuel source (ravine, canyon, hillside, drainage area), and there is fire in the area (within a couple miles), go fill up your car now, and get on the phone to find a place to stay tonight. If you're a couple blocks away, make sure those with sensitivities to airborne pollutants are out of the area, put the family photos in a bag by the door, and understand that if you call 911 later on tonight, no one's going to be answering, but otherwise, you should be fine.
Reverse 911 systems are in effect for those with landlines with the local phone system, they'll call when you need to evacuate, but nothing replaces looking, seeing your situation, and judging for yourself.
IF you evacuate, make sure you have your identification, pills (IN PRESCRIPTION BOTTLES), insurance paperwork, EYEGLASSES (reading and normal vision), etc. Many hotel chains in the greater region are offering discounts for those who are evacuating, call your favorite and ask; if the person at the desk doesn't know, or seems to just want to say no, ask them to call their regional office for discount information. Comfort Suites really tends to offer their deepest discounts during emergencies to those in affected areas.
Travel to pick up someone in affected areas is most likely going to be denied /if/ you just show up. If you need to help evacuate a family member, make sure you're driving a late model COMPACT car, call the sheriff's office (or local PD), make your request firmly but politely, and most times, they'll say 'Have whomever call me on the radio to get you through.' Be prepared with the exact address of who you're picking up, have directions in hand, have identification in hand.
Prayers for all California FReepers - from the SE coast.
I hadn’t realized how fires like this are so much worse than hurricanes - at least we get days of warnings and the severity is predictable in size and likely affected areas.
This is terrifying.
An unimaginable tragedy for both people and helpless animals.
This was updated 35 minutes ago. And there are maps too.
Residents in the Foothill Ranch area of Lake Forest are under mandatory evacuations on La Solita, La Perla, Pandale, and Calle Cabrillo. Residents on Alonda and Coca Street in Lake Forest were being asked to voluntarily evacuate from their homes. Evacuees are asked to go to El Toro High School. The school has been set up by the Red Cross as an evacuation site. The fire is currently near the 241 toll road.
