Bush’s Request for Wars Increases to $196 Billion

President Bush asked Congress on Monday to approve $196 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and other national security programs, setting the stage for a new confrontation with Democrats over the administration’s handling of Iraq.

Mr. Bush’s request increased the amount of the proposed spending by $46 billion over the $150 billion already requested this year. Much of the added spending would pay for new armored vehicles designed to withstand attacks by mines and roadside bombs, and a rise in operational costs because of the increase in the force in Iraq, now at more than 160,000 troops.

This is all borrowed money, because the federal budget is already way in the red. How long will the Chinese continue to loan us these vast sums? And how long before - inevitably - taxes are raised to pay the bill?

"the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan"

Odd choice of words by the NYT. These are simply two campaigns in the war on terror -- not separate "wars".

Freedom is not free.

Would you prefer that the terrorists have their way, and set off some nukes here on our soil?

You’re right. Who cares how much the federal government spends. We’re all “big government conservatives” now. (Except me - sorry about that, I’m still an old-fashioned fiscal conservative - so shoot me)

Raising taxes doesn't bring in more money..(to help with debt)....Higher taxes just brings more control to D.C.

Reality is we are bringing in more federal tax dollars today (after GWB tax cuts) than we were before them.

Cutting spending (outside of those NEEDED funds for the WOT) is how you help pay down our debt. And reality is, our annual debt is less today (as % of GDP) than at most other times in this nation's history....

Prosperity is the big picture answer....Not saving yourself into poverty...

I'm sure out children and grandchildren will find paying the bill equally amusing.

While the bulk of the money requested would go to the Defense Department, the proposal also includes nearly $800 million to support a United Nations peacekeeping mission and elections in Sudan; $106 million for fuel oil under a deal with North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program; and more than $400 million in assistance to the Palestinians as part of the administration’s efforts to nurture a peace treaty with Israel

Couple this with the 500 million out right to mexico for their army and the .9 Billion undisclosed to "latin america"

I want to win this war, I want this war prosecuted with out pansy ass rules of engagement........but I do not and will not condone these kind of "riders" on a troop funding bill.

Send congress the bill for the war............and only the bill for the war.

First off, a budget doesn't go into the red or black. I think you meant national debt, and not budget. Let's get the terms correct because they are a world's of difference. It makes you sound hysterical and not knowing what you are talking about.

Second, the wars are being paid for as we go. Do yourself a favor and take a look at the U.S Treasury website for the yearly and monthly statements. The statements contain both on and off budget expenses. Federal revenue has increased from last year some 21%. The deficit has been decreasing since 2004.

Don't let journalists shove crap up your butt and make you an hysterical clown. Go read the U.S. Treasury monthly statements for yourself. That's why we have the Internet. We own the information and don't have to chew that crap that you seemed to have swallowed whole.

Sorry to be so harsh on you, but someone needed to slap you into reality after you spewed that nonsense.

As a fraction of GDP, the Iraq War is costing much less than others. $200B is about 1.5% of today's economy. In 1969 we spent $30B on Vietnam which was about 3% of GDP. In WWII war spending was vastly larger - according to figures I've read, the US spent perhaps $300B which is about 25% of US GDP 1939-45.

And anyway it's not unreasonable to pass this cost into the future. We're killing terrorists who might otherwise come here in the future and kill us or our kids. Supposing we beat the terrorists in Iraq and that country becomes a bastion of freedom in the ME, we're adding a lot of value to the future. Removing Saddam Hussein from power has been a major boon in itself, just look at all the trouble he caused. Not kicking him out in '92 cost us big time.

Paid for with borrowed money. If the president wants an additional $200 billion then fine, send proposals to Congress to shave $200 billion in other spending and then I might begin to believe him when he talks about wanting to control spending.

This is Bush’s way of spending the money before congress gets a chance to!

If left to the Democratically controlled congress, they would find a way to spend it on their vote buying schemes and then blame Bush for the deficit!

This is totally brilliant

"Paid for with borrowed money."

I thought I was very clear in my post. The war is paid for as we go. If you cannot read a monthly statement of revenue and outlays, that's your issue.

I think you, like the other poster, confuse many things and one of them is deficit. Get back to me when you have poured over the U.S Treasury's monthly and yearly statements. They are available for free on the U.S. Treasury website. Or... you can keep popping off your ignorant mouth. And I mean ignorant not as a bad term, but simply that you do not know.

I always want to ask those who think we’re spending too much money on our defense where they think the limit might be. How much is our freedoms worth?
The problem is not what we’re spending on the war but how much we’re spending for social programs.

Unfortunately, real conservatives have been absent in D.C. for a long time. Bush et al will probably end up on the boards of multinationals doing business with the emerging "People's Republic"

But to answer your questions: 1) until they own most of the US and 2) when Queen Hitlary is coronated.

We could have saved hundreds of billions of dollars, and thousands of lives, by not invading in the first place. With no WMDs and no military to speak of, Iraq was no more of a threat to the US than Zimbabwe is, or Cuba.
