Great Photo of the Day, Snugs!

I am glad he visited the devastation. His compassion will
be felt by the ones who have been displaced. It’s been a
horror out there.

Thanks for your hard work...and for Sanity Island!

Fox news reported this morning that two bodies were found in a burned out house. I wonder if the victims were trying to stay as long as they could and then were unable to get out? It’s sad anyways

A President endures so much on so many other's behalf. He is supposed to absorb their pain and have just the right words or a hug at just the right time. So taxing.

Thank goodness W got the job this time around. He is very good at his calling.

Pray for W and Our Victorious Troops

That is so sad and tragic. Stuff meant too much for them. Or, the fire got there way too soon. We’ll never know.

If those fires were set on purpose I hope the monsters that
did it get the death penalty!

First of all - thanks for the inside view of his trip.

Second - let me say again how much I love it that he wears the same belt most of the time (like me!).

Third - I think its pretty classy the way he is arm-in-arm with Senator Feinstein. Its not only actual physical support when walking through a treacherous area, but it is emotional support too. Seeing that must devastation must be hard to take, and I know the president shares in folk’s tragedies.

And as much as I disagree with the Senator’s policies - I’m glad she could put politics aside and be there with the president. (I seem to recall other events where the politicians seemed to do the separate photo-op one-up-manship with the whole thing).

BUSH TOURS FIRE-RAVAGED REGION
SAN DIEGO — Assistance for victims of the San Diego wildfires will not waver, President Bush pledged Thursday after taking an aerial tour of the fire-ravaged areas of the county, visiting a burned-out neighborhood and thanking firefighters and emergency personnel.
“These fires are going to go out because of the bravery of the people behind us,” Bush said, flanked by about 200 firefighters who met with the president at Kit Carson Park in Escondido.

[I’m tired of the Left and Right falsely accusing the President of spending irresponsibly — conveniently forgetting ALL of the issues he’s had to deal with the last 6 1/2 years!! . . . IBD PROVIDES THE TRUTH!!]
BUSH THE BIG SPENDER? CHECK AGAIN
By INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Thursday, October 25, 2007 4:20 PM PT
Budget Policy: An oft-heard criticism leveled at President Bush is that he’s a “record spender.” And because it’s repeated by those at both ends of the political spectrum, it sounds right. But that doesn’t mean it is right.

. . . In the first six years of his term, including the Office of Management and Budget’s most current estimate for 2007, Bush spent, on average, 20% of GDP.
Was that a lot? Not really. As the chart shows, it puts him in the middle of the presidential pack. Since Johnson took office in late 1963, spending as a share of GDP has averaged 20.4%. And, ironically, spending under LBJ was the lowest.
So rather than a “record” spender, as some claim, Bush is actually below average. Indeed, he’s within statistical spitting distance of President Clinton, who on average spent 19.6% of GDP.
This doesn’t mean we’re for spending. Far from it. We’d love to take a red pen and go through the budget, cutting unnecessary programs and even eliminating whole departments.
We’re with the Heritage Foundation when it says “government should reduce taxes, cut wasteful spending, reform the massive entitlements and fully fund America’s national defense priorities.”
What we don’t like is a dishonest argument, which we feel this has become. Many on the right have criticized Bush for too much spending, at times rightly so. But this has been picked up by Democrats, who now style themselves as fiscal conservatives. They’re not.
If you think they are, the following AP headline from this week will make you think again: “Senate Reverses Bush’s Budget Cuts.” Got it? Under our Constitution, Congress decides spending, not the president. That’s Government 101, elementary civics.
Yes, presidents set goals and ultimately sign off on spending bills. But calling it “Bush’s budget,” or “Johnson’s,” or whoever’s, absolves Congress of its constitutional duty as keeper of the national fisc.
For the record, Bush came into office in January 2001, a time of unique challenges both to our nation’s economy and to its security. They included a stock collapse that erased $8 trillion in national wealth in the space of a few months, a first-ever terrorist attack on U.S. soil that killed 3,000, and a recession that Bush inherited but didn’t cause.
If Bush had pushed to cut the budget in 2001, he might well have been impeached for economic incompetence. A decline in spending would have hurt the economy in the short run, extending the recession and making the recovery in jobs even tougher.
The relevant facts are that, over the past three years, federal spending as a share of GDP has been remarkably stable: 20.2% in 2005, 20.3% in 2006 and 20.2% in 2007. And over the same period, the deficit has been cut in half as a share of GDP.
If you really want to worry, look long-term. Bush has tried to do something about runaway entitlements but has gotten no help. As GAO chief David Walker has noted, $50.5 trillion in entitlement spending looms in the next few decades — with no way to pay for it.
