The world's fattest baby, Siberia and beetroot soup

ALEISK, Russia (Reuters Life!) - Looking after the possibly the world's fattest baby is not easy -- especially when you live in a cramped apartment in Siberia and have 11 other children to care for.

Tatyana Khalina gave birth on September 17 to Nadia, who weighed a whopping 7.75 kg (17.1 lb) at birth. A month later Nadia was finally able to go home from hospital to the family's three-bedroom apartment in Aleisk, a town in Russia's Far East.

"We aren't planning any more kids," Tatyana told Reuters as she cradled Nadia in her apartment. "From now on we are hoping only for grandchildren."

Behind her the floral wallpaper peeled at the corners, baby clothes hung on a line slung across the room and a lace curtain covered the window.

The air was thick with the shouts and laughter of Tatyana's children playing in the apartment -- she now has nine daughters and three sons. The oldest is 12 years old.

Tatiana's husband is Viktor, a driver in the Russian army.

"For the kids I receive 3,500 rubles ($141.3) a month and Viktor's salary is 10,000 rubles," she said, scratching her arm. "That's only enough for food."

That works out at a monthly income of around $545 for the family of 14.

The family eats four loaves of bread and six liters of traditional Russian beetroot soup everyday as well as vegetables. Meat is served on holidays.

"Clothes, toys, shoes are all brought by our neighbors. We just have old clothes," Tatyana said.

Tatyana placed Nadia gently back in an old pram. It is also her cot.

Nadia has lost a bit of weight and the doctors say she could have heart problems, Tatyana said. But today her daughter smiled gently when one of her sisters kissed her on the forehead and rocked her in her arms.

In the kitchen Viktor played with the other children.

"I promised my father that we would have an entire football team," he said grinning. "But we never got there as we mostly had girls, so we've ended up with a volleyball team instead."

Buying a mini-van for family trips to the countryside is Tatyana's dream.

"We also want to get Nadia in to the Guinness Book of Records, but we don't know how to get in touch with the record keepers," Tatyana said.

Simply apply via the internet or write a letter, Guinness World Records told Reuters by telephone from their headquarters in London.

The heaviest baby ever born weighed 10.8 kg in the United States in 1879 but it died within 11 days. The latest edition of the Guinness Book of Records notes a Brazilian baby born this year weighed 7.57 kg. Nadia was heavier.

"If there is such an outstanding claim we encourage the family to apply," Guinness World Records said.

A certificate from Guinness World Records could soon be hanging on wall of the family's cluttered, cramped and youthful apartment.

Not even close. My mother told me her niece gave birth to an 18 lb plus baby way back in the 1940’s

Stick with football, Viktor. You just produced the nose tackle.

I hope during that month they yanked out her ovaries and slapped her in the head a few times.

Well as my dear Grannie told me when I was a teenager “back then, we did what our husband’s told us to do”....

My mother has 9 sisters and 5 brothers.

I wouldn’t classify that as bitching. They’re just stating their situation. I’m in a similar situation, and we made choices that affect our finaces (such as my wife staying home and homeschooling our kids). Sometimes we have to let people know our situation and for them to understand that yes, we have inconveniences, but we are making these sacrifices willingly. Also I bet there are plenty of truck drivers in the russian army that make a whole lot more than that father. I know people that make 3 times as much as I do, just because of the people they tend to associate with. There IS a bias against large families these days. I personally would be more inclined to send them a donation than to judge them.

your character truly matches your username.

It is none of your business how many kids they choose to have, and yes, there are irresponsible people out there who shouldn’t have kids, but these people do not sound like it to me. So they have a more simple life... So what?... How do you know that maybe kid #11 might not go on to become the next Einstein?
if they yanked out womens ovaries according to your wishes, this world would miss out on a LOT of wonderful people.

Apparently you are a free republic troll. “{You} hope they yanked uot her ovaries and . . . “ Who are “they” ——the state enforcers of how many children one family should have or how big they should be? Why shouldn’t they kill the mom and the kid while they are at it? I doubt you have any idea about freedom.

They don’t have anything to eat but bread and beetroot soup, Can’t afford toys, have only old clothes to wear. It sounded like bitching to me. Maybe I am cynical of how the system works here in the USA, more kids=more money from the taxpayers. I have no problem with large families. I do have a problem with people that have large families and expect me and the rest of the tax payers to foot the bill.

“Also I bet there are plenty of truck drivers in the Russian army that make a whole lot more than that father.”

Based on what? I’ll take the bet though since the guy is a truck driver in the military. A military that still has compulsory service. I am surprised he makes as much as he does.

And at the rate Russia’s Muslims are breeding their national survival depends on folks like these Siberians working overtime at babymaking.

"And at the rate Russia’s Muslims are breeding their national survival depends on folks like these Siberians working overtime at babymaking." I couldn't care less about Russia's racial/religious/ethnic composition as they couldn't possibly be more corrupt and murderous than they have been for most of the last century, but, FWIW, those Siberians probably [are the Muslims you're talking about. There aren't many Slavs with the last name Khalina.

Cute but really big baby !!!!!

My concern is with mom and wondering if she is diabetic and I can’t help think about the poor medical care in that country.

Better rethink your position. A Muslim-dominated nation with literally thousands of nuclear warheads on sophisticated (intercontinental) delivery systems is infintely more dangerous than any of Russia's incarnations we've faced this past century.

Yep, Russia needs as many non Muslim babies it can get lest it be taken over. The US and Britain (and Europe) should also get some breeding going on...non muslim of course.

Well, uh - Nadia is the BABY, not the mother! She has little to say about the whole scheme of things!
