I started elementary school in Ohio in 1952 and we were always instructed to “salute” the National Anthem with our hands over our hearts. As Americans, we didn’t need a law to tell us it was the right thing to do.

That’s fine, and in Texas in the sixties in elementary school we were taught not to. I remember distinctly that even in the early seventies at the friday night high school football game, everybody stood and sang, but no one put their hand over their heart. Not even the WWII vets like my father. I never saw it happen until the late seventies, but it’s fine if you did in the fifties.

The point is Obama should now know better. I’ll be curious to see if someone gets to him about this whether he does the same thing next time.
