As a gay man and a conservative I enjoy a good gay joke as much as anyone else (this guy is not even a good joke). I find jokes about conservatives and Christians much more distressing because they tend to be more hateful and less funny. I truly resent the liberal elitist jokes about Nascar and Jesus simply because they are not funny and not really intended to be so.

Moved and seconded. South Park is one ten-season long "Jew joke"... and I know I'm not the only Jewish FReeper hereabouts faithfully devoted to it! ;)

I think you're right... A lot of jokes about red-necks, Christians, etc. are truly mean. Whereas most of the racial, ethnic, and gay jokes I've heard actually play more on the "straight guy's" fears and phobias. That is, you're really laughing at yourself and your stereotypes.

Heck, I have a couple of gay friends, and they know all the best gay jokes. Similarly, a friend of mine of Mexican decent (though born and raised in the US, and a wounded and decorated veteran to boot) knows all the best Mexican/Hispanic jokes. I couldn't begin to tell them like these guys do.

I guess some people just don't get it - it's called humor. If we can't laugh at ourselves (collectively, we're all in this together) then we really are in trouble. We're taking ourselves way, way too seriously. I laugh at myself for being a middle-aged white-guy software-geek with no rhythm, can't sing, drive a funny little car, etc.
