McLean, VA - Today the Fred Thompson campaign announced that two leading Virginia Republicans will serve as the campaign's Virginia Co-Chairs. Former Senator George Allen and Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell will lead the Thompson campaign operation in Virginia.
A self-described "Common Sense Jeffersonian Conservative," George Allen has served the Commonwealth of Virginia for over twenty years. Allen first represented Virginia as a delegate in the General Assembly where he held Thomas Jefferson's seat. Elected to the United States Congress in 1991, Allen was later elected as Governor of Virginia in 1994. While in office he achieved criminal justice reform, education reform, promoted economic growth and helped reform Virginia's government. Elected to the United States Senate in 2000, he was a leading advocate in creating policies to make America and Virginia a leader in innovation an d technology. Allen was unanimously elected Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in 2002 where under his leadership Republicans gained four Senate seats and expanded their majority. Today, he serves as the Reagan Ranch Presidential Scholar for the Young America's Foundation. He also currently serves as a National Co-Chair for the Fred Thompson campaign.
"As we face increasing challenges as a nation, America needs honest leadership on tough and important issues," said Senator Allen. "Fred Thompson has the conservative credentials and leadership qualities necessary to secure our borders, ensure our economic prosperity and protect us from growing global threats. I am proud to serve as his National Co-Chair and look forward to spreading his conservative message to the great people of my home state as his Virginia Co-Chair."
Attorney General Bob McDonnell was elected as the 44th Attorney General of Virginia on November 8, 2005. Prior to serving as Attorney General, McDonnell represented the 84th District for 14 years in the Virginia House of Delegates where he served as the Assistant Majority leader and Chairman of the House Courts of Justice Committee. While in the House of Delegates, McDonnell was a leader in advocating for criminal justice and victims' rights issues, as well as welfare, taxation, and family policy. A former prosecutor in the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney's office, Attorney General McDonnell served 21 years in the United States Army before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
"I strongly support Fred Thompson for President," said Attorney General McDonnell. "Fred is a consistent, common sense conservative whose record matches his rhetoric and whose vision for America is equal to our many current challenges. America needs a strong leader, and Fred Thompson is that leader. I am honored to Co-Chair his campaign in Virginia."
"George Allen and Bob McDonnell have been great leaders for the people of Virginia and I am pleased to have the support of these good friends," said Senator Thompson. "We share the same conservative values and believe in the same first principles and I welcome their support as we carry our consistent conservative message along the campaign trail."
George Allen, despite his recent election troubles, carries a lot of weight in Virginia.
Let me be the first: MACACA!

Dead. Horse. Beat. You know the drill.
George Allen is a huge pick up in Virginia.
“Macaca” only works for liberals.
Allen remains important to the Conservative/Republican base.

He also carries valuable knowledge of the districts and contact lists.
Part of his loss was of his own doing. he ran a bad campaign, atypical of his previous campaigns and probably reflective of his concentration having been on a W.H. run then where it should have been. That was what did him in because he had survived “macaca” initially. Didn’t help though that certain Romney folks were bashing him left and right during that period (looking at you K-Lo) because they viewed him as competition in ‘08. I hold people like them partially responsible as well.
BTW, RedState has more information up about the NRTL endorsement. Seems it was brought about by local and state leaders of the chapters, not the higher ups in D.C. IMO, that’s good news. Shows where the grassroots really are right now and I trust people like myself more then I trust guys in suits in D.C. susceptible to bribes.
And, apparently, Fred made it clear executive appointments (not just judges) where abortion policy can be influenced should be held be pro-lifers. that’s big, and something I did not expect. As a pro Life Christian that has chosen to support thompson based mostly on his RECORD alone even though I don’t think he’s as strong as Bush on the issue, and disagrees with him on FMA, this is huge for me. He’s gone out of his way not to pander to social conservatives like myself, so the fact he’s making this promise to us makes me feel far more secure he means it and it’s a nice boost in my enthusiam for the man.
I’ve been a social conservative long before I knew what liberalism and conservatism was and long before I followed politics. Amnesty and WOT have arisen as big issues for me since, but I was born a social conservative and will die one. His record indicated he’d be good on judges and not funding embryonic stem cells. Romney and Rudy’s records offered no such relief. Huckabee is Clintonesque on everything but the issue and the others aren’t realistically in this race. I made a pragmatic choice. feels like my choice is being rewarded a bit here.
I don’t know anything about McDonnell, but I’m glad Allen is on board.
Why?
Very informative post.
The powers-that-be are doing their best to manipulate the race against conservatives.
I am very happy we are ignoring them.
I’d have voted for Allen anyway, but I counted the macaca thing primarily in his favour. I just wish he’d told the media to piss off.
Exactly. I had a much trouble here fighting off "Conservatives for Webb" as I did elsewhere. As for the campaign, there were some personnel issues there that I won't elaborate on.
Allen is still mighty popular among the Virginia GOP. They all know he got screwed. And the rest of the populace (except for the far left) is having a morning after wake up call with Webb saying "what have I done?"
Interesting that Allen and McDonnell are together on this since there's speculation that they're both running for Governor in 2009.
Because Allen should have known better than to be say such as dumbass thing. For one stupid intolerant remark he loses a seat for Republicans and sets back conservatives about ten years. He doesn't represent ME as a VA conservative, that's for damn sure!
OK, does anyone know how I can get in touch with the nascent Fred campaign in Virginia so I can start working for them?
have you been to the website?
BUMP
Them guys Aggies by any chance?........
