Vapid Debates: Can't Parties Do Any Better?
IBD ^ | November 16, 2007 | David S. Broder

During Thursday night's Democratic presidential debate in Las Vegas, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was given a chance to answer the question about offering driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Before CNN's Wolf Blitzer turned to him, several of Richardson's rivals had wrestled with the question that had thrown Sen. Hillary Clinton for a loop in the previous debate, triggering two weeks of complaints that she was being dodgy.

Clearly intent on setting that notion to rest, she answered this time with a monosyllable, "No." Her governor, Eliot Spitzer, had abandoned the plan a day earlier, so she was joining the retreat.

Instead, it was Sen. Barack Obama who seemed flummoxed. At first, he acknowledged that he had voted as an Illinois state senator to require undocumented aliens to "get trained, get a license, get insurance to protect public safety." But a moment later, confusingly, he said, "I am not proposing that that's what we do." And finally, he said, "Yes."

Former Sen. John Edwards objected to the question, then said "No, but . . . anyone who's on the path to earning American citizenship should be able to have a driver's license."

Sen. Chris Dodd said "I think driver's licenses are the wrong thing to be doing, in terms of attracting people to come here as undocumented."

Rep. Dennis Kucinich objected to the question because "there aren't any illegal human beings," and, after an irrelevant swipe at NAFTA, ended up agreeing with Edwards.

When you have vapid candidates, vapid moderators and vapid audience members.......you will always get vapid debates.

What gets me about this kook is that when he was mayor of Cincinnatti he bankruped the city and is actually proud of it

"when he was mayor of Cincinnatti"

He DID bankrupt the city, but it was CLEVELAND.

He wouldn't negotiate with the banks, and insisted he was right.

When Joe Biden makes the most sense in a debate, that’s the definition of vapid.

"So, will Ohio shun him?"

No way....he represents total-entitlements constituency: minorities and retirees.

They re-elect the dufus continuously, and the Leftie Moonbats think he's the ONLY candidate who has it right! LOL

I wish we had a better mechanism to choose and select among candidates.

These “debates” are really nothing of the sort and they’re totally useless for the serious work of selecting someone for the most important job in the world.

The skills that make someone successful in these “debates” and for that matter campaigns in general— have nothing whatever to do with the job of President.

It’s like testing prospective new quarterbacks by finding out which of them is the best swimmer.

We really do need another way. “American Idol” has a better thought-out process and that’s just for a record contract.

Well, I for one, was getting “freaked out” as it took awhile to find a post involving shrillary. Is FR being smart and coy, don’t let the opposition know what we are thinking?
We want the dims to choose ol’ hill, right? (last person normal people would ever want to call pres, right?)

Anyone with an open mind -— looking at that panel -— must wonder if that is the best that this country can come up with —— what must be the worst? No wonder Hillary stands out. What a bunch of nothings!

Did the Dems do this to make Hillary stand out?

Yes, Dennis K. thinks all corporations are evil, but sees nothing wrong from stealing money from those who work hard and giving it to those who don’t want to work. Typical bizarre Democrat.

Taxation is theft by government.

LOL.. Did Edwards chime in “Unless I’m mistaken, Obama just gave 3 different answers in less than 2 minutes?”

Deja Vu. What a pathetic bunch.
