Atheists' Sign Spurs Talk, Thought

TO OBSERVE the winter solstice, Connecticut Valley Atheists have erected this sign in Rockville's Central Park. It has offended some residents and rattled town hall, in background. The atheists say religion inspired the attacks of 9/11. Ironically, some see the image of a cross in the sunlight flooding the twin towers on the sign. (Marc-Yves Regis I, Hartford Courant / December 5, 2007)

VERNON - The sturdy white sign in Rockville's Central Park asking passers-by to "Imagine No Religion" has generated some calls, a few of them angry, to town hall. There have also been calls to local clergymen and discussion in businesses along Rockville's West Main Street.

The sign — some call it a billboard — was erected on Dec. 1 by the Connecticut Valley Atheists, and as of Thursday was the only display erected in the town's center to mark the holiday season, aside from a Christmas tree just across from the town hall and some garland and white lights wrapped around light poles.

The three words on the sign are drawn from the John Lennon song "Imagine."

On Friday, a town crew erected a larger Christmas tree, 10 feet from the atheists' three-sided display. Mayor Jason L. McCoy said that the intent was not to block the view of the atheists' display, but to place a larger Christmas tree in a prominent position in the park. He said he directed town staff to purchase a larger Christmas tree and to "find a spot in the middle of the green. That's just where it happened to be."

Asked if placement of the tree was intended to obscure the atheists' display, McCoy responded, "Of course not." When told that it appeared to be blocking the display, McCoy said, "Oh, really; that's unfortunate."

Imagine no religion?? But then there would be no atheism, which the silliest religion ever conceived.

It makes pantheism look sensible.

Having once been an atheist and having an ex husband who is one, I can tell you from personal experience that they are extremely angry people who feel sorry for themselves.

Fortunately I FINALLY came to my senses - divorced him and became a Christian!

they’re not really atheists folks; they’re anti Christians. (they hate Christianity to the depths of their bones and Christians even more, if that’s possible.
if they can kill off Christianity they can become the neo-stalins of their generation, with glee.)

An atheist is someone without religion. Such a person might shake their head at believers, but after all, what is it to the atheist? No big deal.

But an anti-theist is someone who campaigns against religion. The beliefs of the anti-theist are strong, and they work to destroy competing faiths.

I've known only a few atheists: Nice folks, generally.
I've known far more anti-theists: Nasty lot, each and every one.

The atheists say religion inspired the attacks of 9/11.

So, what inspired Stalin, Mao, etc?

WHEN JESUS CAME TO OUR TOWN
By G. A. Studdert-Kennedy

When Jesus came to Golgotha
They hanged Him on a tree,
They drove great nails through hands and feet,
And made a Calvary;

They crowned Him with a crown of thorns,
Red were His wounds and deep,
For those were crude and cruel days,
And human flesh was cheap.

When Jesus came to our town,
They simply passed Him by,
They never hurt a hair of Him,
They only let Him die;

For men had grown more tender,
And they would not give Him pain,
They only just passed down the street,
And left Him in the rain.

Still Jesus cried, “Forgive them,
For they know not what they do,”
And still it rained the winter rain
That drenched Him through and through;

The crowds went home and left the streets
Without a soul to see,
And Jesus crouched against a wall
And cried for Calvary.

A Soviet gulag, Pol Pot’s killing fields, etc come to mind as much more appropriate pictures for one to imagine there is no religion

Yep, atheists right down there with the animals in being unaware that life could not come from a mud puddle anymore than your car did. How can any thinking human believe in spontaneous generation of complex living systems?

Two points:

The atheists say religion inspired the attacks of 9/11

1. Though true, religious "Islamic radicalism" did inspire the 9/11 attacks, by putting all religion on equal footing by not qualifying which religion attacked us makes them either disingenuous at best or simply propagandist or fools

2. I think it's a great idea to ask people to think "Imagine No Religion" thinking about that concept would make people realize why 95 % of the people living on this planet belive in some sort of deity

For every bad deed done in the name of "religion" there are 10,000 good deeds done

People of faith have nothing to fear from the 5% who are afraid to think there is something bigger than themselves

I forgot to mention that all atheists suddenly get religion when death is imminent.

An atheist is someone without religion.

That's a personal definition. A person without religion is said to be irreligious.

An atheist has never set foot in a Fox Hole! Not one time since records have been kept.

Strange things about the aetheists, they say there is no God, but obviously, they take Him so very seriously that they “choose” to compete with Him in our public square at the precise time of His Son’s birth. Killing at birth seems to be a fetish for them. (Partial Birth defenders take heed)

I will say something for them though. They take Him so seriously that they will stand up in the media and the public square to insult Him and declare Him dead while we who claim to love and believe in Him stay inside our comfort zones of home and hearth and mutter under our breath.

Douglas revealed the heart of an atheist in a two-part statement: “There is no God, and I hate Him.”

“An atheist is someone without religion. Such a person might shake their head at believers, but after all, what is it to the atheist? No big deal.”

Works for me, and i do not even bother with the head shaking.
