COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Jeanne Assam appeared before the news media for the first time Monday and said she "did not think for a minute to run away" when a gunman entered the New Life Church in Colorado Springs and started shooting.
There was applause as Assam went before reporters and TV cameras saying "God guided me and protected me."
New Life's Senior Pastor Brady Boyd called Assam "a real hero" because Murray "had enough ammunition on him to cause a lot of damage." When asked by a reporter if she felt like a hero, Assam said, "I was given the assignment to end this before it go too much worse."
"I give credit to God," she said.
Assam described how the gunman, Matthew Murray, entered the east entrance of the church firing his gun.
"There was chaos," Assam said, as parishioners ran away.
"I saw him coming through the doors" and took cover, Assam said. "I came out of cover and identified myself and engaged him and took him down."
"God was with me," Assam said. "I didn't think for a minute to run away."
Assam worked as a police officer in downtown Minneapolis during the 1990s and is licensed to carry a weapon. She attends one of the morning services and then volunteers as a guard during another service.
The victims killed in the Colorado Springs shooting were identified Monday as sisters Stephanie Works, 18, and Rachael Works, 16. Their father, David Works, 51, suffered two gunshot wounds -- one to the abdomen and one to the groin -- and was listed in fair condition on Monday. They were shot in the parking lot as they were getting into their van.
"Our concern is for our family that lost two teenage daughters. Our hearts are grieving," said Brady Boyd. "You can imagine, as parents, losing two children while coming to church, just showing up for a worship service, not bothering anyone."
Boyd said Assam was the one who suggested the church beef up its security Sunday following the Arvada shooting, which it did. The pastor credited the security plan and the extra security for preventing further bloodshed.
Boyd said there are 15 to 20 security people at the church. All are volunteers but the only ones armed are those who are licensed to carry weapons.
About 7,000 people were on the church campus at the time of the shooting, said Boyd.
He most certainly did.
Oh, puleeze...
It's all breath control and sight picture.
HUH?
Praise God for allowing this security guard to prevent many other deaths
This incident should be the END of those, mostly democRATS, who want to quash the second amendment. If good people don’t have arms for protection, only bad people will have them. I’ll take my chances in the red states over the blue states any day.
“God guided me and protected me.”
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!
“It’s all breath control and sight picture.”
Agreed. She also stated that she was very calm (breath control and focus) because she knew the Holy Spirit was with her. Her years in training and on the beat in Minneapolis were no doubt with her too!
Wow what a lady. Wonder if she’s single.
I give credit to God,” she said.”
“Oh, puleeze...
It’s all breath control and sight picture.”
You obviously have never had to shoot somone else who is armed...it takes alot more than “breath control and sight picture” LMAO
and before you start calling me names,
I “walked point” for the 5th Marines in Nam in 1969 and 1970.
yes and verrrrrrrrrrrrry pretty!
check out the interview video on the link
That was a very smooth smack down. Well done and thanks for your service.
Well stated Kellynla.
She is, and said that God is going to find her the perfect husband.
Well, for the first time lately, God has let her down.
I'm already married. But if not, there's nothing like a wife who can shoot under fire. And, if you're going to have to obey, it's more manly to at least have taken out the trash because she told you to--or else!
I'm not sure how much more positive talk about God and an armed citizens the media can handle before their heads explode.
Two things I noticed:
How media slick that pastor was.
How she thought of the victims first and refused to politicize the event by talking about gun rights. The girl is all class.
Can’t she thank God for helping her control her breathing and aiming properly? I certainly would.
May I please call you some names, sir? I'd like to begin with the name, "Hero."
Thank you so very much.
Ms. Assam will be on Larry King Live in five minutes from now. I am not a LK fan, but do want to see this interview.
Thanks for posting this.
I plucked this line from the AP via gazette.com:
“
Another neighbor, 19-year-old Cody Askeland, told The Associated Press that Matthew Murray and his brother, Christopher, were home-schooled and their family was very, very religious.
