He was a republican first. He felt his only opportunity was to run on the libertarian ticket, went back to the republican party. But you write it makes him a libertarian.
One of the greatest presidents (as you well know) was a democrat in his early life, changed to a republican, ran as a republican and was elected. With the logic you wrote, guess that would have made him a democrat, correct? Or does the logic
only apply to RP.
BTW, the democrat who turned republican also embraced some libertarian views. If that matters to you.

As has already been pointed out on this thread, he has always been a Republican. He ran once on the Libertarian ticket in 1988 because he was not very impressed with Bush as Reagan's successor.
