Brazil gives man 34 years in prison for murder, robbery in Japan

A Brazilian court sentenced a Japanese-Brazilian on Monday to 34 years and five months in prison for murder, robbery and attempted arson in Japan in 2005.

The ruling is the first a Brazilian court has handed down on a defendant of Brazilian nationality indicted at the request of the Japanese government.

The defense council for Humberto Jose Hagime Alvarenga, 36, is poised to appeal the sentence delivered by the Minas Gerais state court in the southeastern Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.

The ruling said the defendant strangled Kaname Mikami, 57, and stole about 40,000 yen worth of cash from Mikami's restaurant in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, in November 2005. He returned to Brazil soon after the incident.

The Shizuoka prefectural police later put him on a wanted list on suspicion of murder and robbery.

The man could not be sent back to Japan because the two countries have no extradition treaty and Brazil's Federal Constitutions forbids the handover of Brazilian suspects to foreign countries.

The Japanese government last December asked Brazil to indict and punish him under Brazilian law.

Hmmmm...pretty strong incentive to high-tail it back to Brazil.

"... Brazil's Federal Constitutions forbids the handover of Brazilian suspects to foreign countries."

Note to self for future reference.

Right you are. There are plenty of small family restaurants in Japan, This POS found a little Mamasan, who cooks for a living, likely out of her own house, and strangled her to get his air fare together to go to Brazil.

I think the sentence looks good on him, may he rot there.

And if he were sentenced in Japan, he likey wouldn't last a week in Japanese jail. He would likely kill himself.

Too bad the Japanese didn't get their hands on him.

This POS is one of the reasons that all foreigners in Japan, including those on work visas, or permanant residents, have now got to be finger printed as a condition of continuing domicile in Japan.
