CA: More flee state than move in
LA Times ^ | 12/20/07 | Sharon Bernstein and Paloma Esquivel, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers

California's population continued to grow modestly in the last fiscal year despite a significant exodus of residents to other states, according to a state report released Wednesday.

The annual study by the Department of Finance showed that 89,000 more people moved out of California than moved here from elsewhere in the United States. California's population did grow in fiscal 2007 -- but the growth rested on births and the arrival of more than 200,000 immigrants from other countries.

The shift dovetails with the state's weakening economy and is most likely related, said Howard Roth, chief economist for the Department of Finance.

Those who left, Roth said, were fleeing an economy in which just 5,800 jobs per month were created -- down from more than 20,000 per month the previous year. Jobs were lost in housing, finance, construction and other sectors, and key indicators like the number of automobiles sold were also down, he said.

People who are leaving the state, he said, are probably doing so because they believe they'll do better elsewhere.

"If you're someone in finance and you haven't already been laid off . . . or if you've lost your job here and maybe your house, maybe you're thinking that there are better prospects out there in other states," he said.

The trend toward reduced "domestic migration" -- which began in 2005 and has increased dramatically since -- is a sharp turnaround from nearly a decade of sustained population growth.

In Los Angeles County alone, nearly 115,000 fewer residents came from other states and California counties than moved to other states and counties. The county ended up with a total increase in population thanks to 91,000 births and an influx of 70,000 residents from foreign countries. (The county now has roughly 10,294,000 residents).

I remember when I used to defend California's decline on FR too.

Then I pulled my head out with a pop and left.

First of all the headline is misleading because the article specifically states that there are NOT “more flee state than move in.”

People who are leaving the state, he said, are probably doing so because they believe they'll do better elsewhere.

Nope.

I know probably 1,200 people that’ll be leaving California within the next five years. They’re leaving because they’re RETIRING.

I retired years ago. My wife will be retiring in 2008. That’s when we’ll also be leaving.

Over the next seven years her company expects to lose over 70% of their management structure to retirement.

That’s what happens when you have a company that begins a big nationwide expansion in ~1980. Starting around 2005 people begin hitting that 25 year mark and head OUT the door.

Of all the people retiring (that I know personally) only a handful are native Californians or intend to stay – generally due to having kids/grandkids here. ALL the rest were transferred to CA to fill job assignments and intend to go back to wherever.

That’s how that works.

Wow Kansas City has the exact same number of every crime listed. No number given so maybe it was one event!

"[The significant exodus of residents to other states] won't be the lasting problem we had in the 1990s," Roth said. "It will go away."

Wanna bet?

Presidential Medal of Freedom winner, former Secretary of the California Health and Welfare agency and co-founder of MALDEF, Mario Obledo, said that California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn't like it should leave. As Secretary of the Health and Welfare agency in California, he was instrumental in bringing thousands of Hispanics into state government work.

So why exactly aren't they retiring in place? Why are they choosing to move out of state leaving friends, family, and familiarity? Why aren't they spending their golden years in the people's paradise on the left coast? You have beaches, perfect weather, beautiful scenery, golf courses galore... as far as geography goes it's a perfect place to retire, so why change?

Could it be that they believe that they believe they will do better somewhere else?

Florida is experiencing the same problem. For an economy based so much on growth, it is not a good sign. State officials are not admitting it yet, but all you need to do is ask the moving companies...

The newest budget estimate is that California, now faces a 14 billion deficit next year.

And the allegedly Republican governor, is literally the only thing standing between that 14 billion deficit, and the state assembly of tax/spend democrats.

The property tax base is rapidly deflating. Almost all economic trends are down. Real estate is collapsing.

Ain’t gonna end well, IMHO.

I forsee a day, when literally the only arrow left in the quiver, will be a roll-back of Prop. 13, and massive tax increases. Who will pay all those taxes?

Illegals?..

More flee state than move in

Ever notice that its always this way with the more liberal states? People fleeing liberal states for somewhat more conservative ones. People fleeing California to move to Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, etc. People fleeing New York to go to Florida and North Carolina. People fleeing Massachusettes to move to New Hampshire, etc.

Its not the other way around. You dont see hordes of people fleeing New Hampshire to move to Massachusettes, nor thousands and thousands of people fleeing Florida and North Carolina to move to New York.

Interesting that they choose one of the worst crime cities to compare themselves to. ("Well, at least we're not as bad as...")

Comparing to NYC, LA has approximately double the crime rates for all of those listed categories. They're on par with Houston for violent crime (but better in property crime). They're on par with Philly for property crime (but a little better for violent crime). They're far worse than San Diego and Phoenix for both property and violent crime.

When compared fairly with the other largest cities, LA is clearly below average. While forcible rape and all property crimes are surprisingly low, aggravated assault is among the top in the country (matching DC).

But hey, they're not Atlanta, Baltimore, NOLA, or Detroit, so it must be a wonderful crime-free place.

Financially, yes. You can earn a retirement that is based on an inflated salary, then move to Phoenix, Las Vegas…Georgia. All are cheaper and you can stretch your retirement dollar.

Another part of this, as mentioned by a previous poster, lost of folks in CA have roots somewhere else.

You’re comparing a city of 450,000 to a city of nearly 4 million?

Read the post again slick. I could only compare large city to large city. If you find and LA sized city in Kansas, let me know.

Seem some here don't like the chart or the facts. Too bad.

You do know what per capita means right?

Would you care to see the actual numbers? Let me know I'll be more than happy to provide them.

You too professor, if you want to see the actual numbers, let me know.

I should have figured some here would dispute the chart as they stammer and stomp their feet in the face of facts.

It is not that I don’t believe you, but the chart does not make sense without a scale and it defies belief that each crime type had the exact same number of instances, whether per capita, per annum or per square mile.
