Probably at least a couple of things:

The whole family of the shootee are probably all low-class idiots who frequently say and do low-class, stupid things, but that (unfortunately) isn't a Capital Offense and is not in and of itself grounds for an innocent verdict for Mr. White. Very very few criminal cases involve one person who is a 100% Saint and another who is a 100% Devil, but even those few cases that are thusly proportioned still balance on the rule of law.
The New York Daily News is playing up the low-class nature of this family and the more dignified nature of the Whites, which may well indeed be true. However, that doesn't change the fact that Mr. White made a huge mistake when he elected to go outside and needlessly escalate an already tense situation that more than likely could have been diffused via police intervention..
