Republicans see McCain surge in wide open race

DES MOINES, IOWA — A jet carrying Sen. John McCain of Arizona touched down Wednesday evening on Iowa's western border, marking a remarkable comeback for the veteran politician and opening another intriguing narrative in the wide open Republican field.

After McCain was left for dead politically this summer, his decision to return to a state he skipped altogether in his 2000 bid for the White House is one of the many signs that the GOP contest for president is still a campaign in search of a front-runner.

McCain has surged back into a strong second place in New Hampshire, where former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the GOP front-runner there, returned Wednesday in the hopes of shoring up his eroding poll numbers. The two men traded angry, long-distance insults that signaled an abrupt end to the convivial Christmas messages that Republican hopefuls offered voters last week.

Study the history of the Democrat team from North Dakota as I have done. Amnesty for illegal aliens? The next one up for re-election (Dorgan) votes no. The one just re-elected (Conrad) votes yes.

Rewind to the confirmation of Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito. The one facing the voters (Conrad) votes yes, the one who is more than an election away (Dorgan) votes no.

Otherwise, this team is in lock-step. These guys are not stupid. They know any votes more than two years prior to an election won't be remembered by voters. And how many voters do you think pay attention to a senate rule like the filibuster anyway?

I agree, McCain is my second choice also (although I am sure we will disagree on my first choice), and I am also anybody but Huck!.

I have said for months that I really think that McCain could be our "consensus" candidate, if some would get over the bitterness he, admittedly, has left in the mouths of GOP voters.

This man has two things that many here claim to want, he is a conservative, and he is most importantly electable! Every candidate has something about them that we have to overlook, so why can't we overlook McCains negatives and get behind him?

I have said that when I get to vote in Wisconsin (Feb 29th) I will then decide based on viability if my vote goes to McCain or Rudy. My 2 major issues in this election will be WOT, and electability, and they both fit those criteria IMO.

Are you kidding me?
This is FreeRepublic, the natural habitat of the unappeasables.
Around here, the locals see 'electability' as suspicious and liberal.

Agreement with you on McCain.... It is almost hysterically funny to read these pufffff pieces about McCain, when the fact of the matter is he is Hillry’s best friend.
