The third page of a bogus holiday greeting card received by many South Carolina Republicans this week purported to be from from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney citing controversial passages of the Book of Mormon. The last page features a photograph of a massive temple above a box that says 'Paid for by the Boston Massachusetts Temple' Romney's campaign said it had nothing to do with the cards and a Boston Temple official said the temple had nothing to do with sending mail to South Carolina Republicans, who go to the polls Jan. 19, 2007. I already posted my scenario.

And most likely it ticks you off cause you know I’m right!

When reading, wither in print or online, you have to make a concerted effort to leave the text and go find the foot note reference.

I realize that and I don't know many LDS who would not check the footnote/s.
Some of the footnotes do not change the overall meaning of some of the verses but the point I am making is that the LDS KJV does have the JS translations noted in it.

I don’t think a Democrat would do this right now. They would save it for after the primaries. I think it is most likely a supporter of another Republican. Not done by the campaign itself, but by a freelancer who thinks s/he is helping.

Really? How many Mormons do you know and ask about their specific reading habits of the bible? I am highly suspicious of your assumption. I rarely check the footnotes when I read. When I’m in depth studying I will do searches and cross referencing, it’s a great resource. The text we use is there to be read and not altered. It’s the King James Version, no matter how you try to say otherwise.

If someone really wanted to track this down, it should be fairly easy. There should be a postmark, the paper and inks used would provide information. Monk would be able to solve it!

This really is meant to harm Romney in a hideous way that it’s hard to believe takes place in the USA in 2007. Interetingly, some of the dirtiest political tricks were also carried out in SC in 2000. McCain seems unable to forgive Bush, and I don’t think Bush had anything to do with it, but some outside group that is really, really sick.

I don't have time to count how many mormons I know. From my own personal experience during group readings the footnotes were important.

The Joseph Smith Translation has restored some of the plain and precious things that have been lost from the Bible (1 Ne. 13). Although it is not the official Bible of the Church, this translation does offer many interesting insights and is very valuable in understanding the Bible. It is also a witness for the divine calling and ministry of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

For me the footnotes were just as important as what was written in the Bible.

Perfect example of Romney’s #1 weakness. Lots of people believe that Mormonism is a cult, and advertising that he’s a cult member is very damaging to him

I wouldn’t disagree with any of that.

BTW, this just in. Romney picked up another big evangelical endorsement today.

As a longtime Mormon (born and raised) I also have to question the idea that all LDS people check the footnotes. I rarely do, actually. But then again, I see them as more of a distraction than anything. I’m just not a footnote type of gal, and that’s including any kind of reading, not just the scriptures.

Anyway, the real point is, the scripture in the fake Christmas card came from the Book of Mormon, not the Bible, and yes, in the LDS Church, they are two completely separate books of scripture.

No Romney supporter would think this is a good idea, so the question becomes “Whodunit?” The answer is, I have no clue.

Unfortunately.

I wrote about this card on my blog, if you want to check it out.

This kind of thing really twerks my ticker, and I sincerely hope they figure out who it is, and soon.

Havs

Thank you. I wasn't trying to argue. Things change in the church and I wondered if the footnotes had been taken out of the LDS KJV or lost the importance they had at one time.

Romney isn't my man but good for him. I am sure him and Huckabee (who also isn't on my list) are trying to get all the evangelical endorsements they can.

I think they are still important, and there is a ton of useful cross referencing, but as far as JS translation, I rarely use it. Don’t need to. There wasn’t a whole lot of changes in the translation anyway.

As a longtime Mormon (born and raised) I also have to question the idea that all LDS people check the footnotes.

I was a convert and so were many of my friends. We didn't want to skip any part of the scriptures. Some of us were somewhat envious that we weren't born into the church and scared we would miss something lol

Thanks for your blog link! I have mixed feelings on the card. Obviously it was sent out with a racial tone and as your blog says implies the church is getting into politics.
My mixed feelings is on who would do such a thing. I don't think it would be a former Mormon. Can't remember if I read that in this thread or your blog. As a former Mormon that is something I would never do. After 20 years as an active member I may have left the church but I can't imagine anyone doing such a thing. I would sway more to someone who wants him out of the race and is threatened by Romney.
