Two days before the Iowa caucuses — day 15 of his 17-day "hands down" bus tour — former senator Fred Thompson's campaign bus stood motionless in the snowy parking lot of a West Des Moines motel, across from a movie theater and a suburban strip mall.
Thompson's campaign scheduled only one event for New Year's Day, a meet-and-greet at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, about an hour outside Des Moines. Thompson, R-Tenn., shunned the bus, emblazoned with his picture, for the relative comfort of a black Chevrolet Suburban.

Thompson has staked his campaign's prospects to Iowa. In seeking to jump-start his campaign last month, he promised to crisscross the Hawkeye State with visits to 50 cities and towns in 17 days aboard his new campaign bus.

I'm curious - do you consider it an "attack" on Romney when Fred supporters point out Mitt's longstanding pro-abortion record on a thread where a Mitt supporter has (falsely) claimed that Mitt is "100% pro-life"?
Hunter's campaign isn't sucking the oxygen out of Thompson, it's just plain sucking. Hunter should've put everything into having a good showing in the Ames straw poll, and instead he put in no effort then until a week beforehand. I've heard from a couple of sources that folks working with the campaign BEGGED him to aim for Ames, and when he didn't, they left him.
The fact that Hunter is still running (if you can call it that) tells me that the guy is in it for some reason other than becoming president. I want to believe that much because, if he is still in it to win it, it's a sad commentary on his grasp of reality.
If all of hunter’s support supported Fred, it wouldn’t raise him 1%. While if all of Freds support went to hunter, he would be in 4th place at 12%. So I don’t see any reason for you to continue to bash Fred. Freds supporters aren’t enough to help Duncan out of the back of the pack. So STOP IT already!!!
I’m amazed that Two conservative candidates can’t get to 13% while Huck, Romney and Insane lead the pack.
But as my Christmas gift to you, if for some reason Duncan stays on the card with only 1%, I’m going to write in “pissant” rather than vote for Duncan.
Seeing as my vote won’t help him any more than it helped Fred, I might as well enjoy it when I write in a name.
I’m not anti- anyone (well except for Ron Paul). I am pro-Thompson, who yes has a helluva lot more chance to win than Hunter. I like Hunter; I prefer Thompson.
He said that in a sarcastic tone after the Press person asked if he had to finish 3rd. I know. Because I was in the room when it happened.
It was a putdown to the press.
If you assume that Thompson will bow out after finishing third in Iowa, while Hunter will soldier on afer getting maybe one tenth of one percent of the caucus votes, you are even more deluded than kevmo, the other Hunter supporter still nursing faint hope. Hunter will bow out before the New Hampshire primary. He'll be the first to go. McCain will be next, after Florida. Alan Keyes and Ron Paul will continue embarrassing themselves right up to the convention, but by super Tuesday, there will only be two viable candidates left, Romney and Thompson. Huckabee will be around, but not a factor; ditto Giuliani.

We are one day before the Iowa caucus and it’s not Fred’s fault Hunter has not been discovered. It’s Hunter’s fault. If he wanted to be President, he should have at least become a Senator. Voters don’t select Presidents from the House of Representative. They only represent districts. With few exceptions their name recognition is almost nil. Senators and Governors represent states. They are better known and have wider areas of responsibility.
In addition, for all the criticism about Fred's campaigning, Hunter has campaigned less aggressively and spent less time fund raising than Fred. If Duncan really wanted this, he should have devoted full time to it. And yes, I know he still has a day job in the House. But to gain the big prize as a relative unknown, he had to know he could not keep his seat and run at the same time. [Ron Paul is the exception because, as the only antiwar candidate in the race, the antiwar crowd literally picked him up and ran with him. Even with that, he still won't win.]
So here we are. Two conservative candidates for us to choose from and you are going to devote your time to the tearing down of one of them because most of the nation cannot name yours or recognize him from a photograph. Sure, you can continue to blame Fred because you can't bring yourself to place the blame where it belongs, but you really do know the truth.

What I do know is the ugliness on these threads is just downright awful. I just don’t understand why some people can not express disagreement with others without resorting to being downright nasty.

He is VERY good at that -- which is why the press doesn't like him :)
I won't be "ROFL" but will be very interested in YOUR reaction when Duncan Hunter drops out. Who will you put your support behind then?
Because the assumption here is that Hunter will drop out soon and Fred is going to fight til the end. I see it the other way around.
Just curious, pissant - let's say that the absolutely, unimaginably impossible yet magically oh-so-likely thing happens, and Hunter manages to get less than 1% in Iowa, New Hampshire AND South Carolina, and drops out.
1) Who do you think he would endorse, of all the other GOP candidates?
2) Who would YOU support, without Hunter in the race?
So, who do you like for 2012?
Pissant has more than a candidate at stake. Pissant’s personal pride is at stake here, and it’s circling the drain with his candidate’s fortunes.
Do we have a friendly wager on who is dropping out first?
