Calling for new tone on immigration debate.

DES MOINES, Iowa—Members of the Iowa Interfaith Immigration Coalition are urging presidential candidates of both parties to conduct the debate over immigration policy in a civil manner “that respects human dignity.”

In a Dec. 4 news conference, Connie Ryan Terrell, executive director of The Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, led a group of speakers who gathered to “change the negative, public attitudes and rhetoric which demonize and dehumanize our immigrant friends and neighbors.”

Ms. Terrell said this “destructive attitude has permeated our nation,” making the discussion about immigration a more “complex and difficult debate.”

In a four-week period, more than 3,600 signatures from across the state of Iowa were gathered on a “Creating a Welcoming State” petition, the group said at the news conference.

The petition states, “We pledge ourselves as people of faith and goodwill to stand with our immigrant neighbors who have come to the United States from throughout the world. Recognizing the moral imperative to welcome the stranger in our midst, we commit ourselves to support laws that affirm their dignity, preserve their families, and acknowledge the value of their presence among us.”

“that respects human dignity.”

Human dignity starts at home, so why don't you illegals go home.

Reminds me of a line from ‘Outlaw Josey Wales’

Wales: ‘So, all these people are your sisters and brothers?’

Priest: ‘They most certainly are!’

Wales: ‘Fine, so you won’t mind them staying at your place for the night. . . .’

it might be more profitable to squeeze stones looking for blood.

Why is it always about the dignity of illegals? Never about the dignity of Americans and how they are tired of being invaded? Doesn't wanting to protect your home and country constitute dignity?

I’m as religious as the next guy. How about discussing the immigration issue under “my terms” as I think it is more humanitarian. In short, let’s not disrespect those obeying the law and arrest those who do violate the law. There, done, very humanitarian.

I want to be a Christian about this entire issue but, having someone say this in the face of a mass invasion is insanity at its worst. (conduct the debate over immigration policy in a civil manner “that respects human dignity“.)
Americans respects human dignity, all the Americans I know are asking the same thing!! Why are you violating our laws, why are you insisting that you have a rigth to violate us. Do you not know you are violating the American People when you violate the laws of America you also violate the people!! Stop the invasion! If you bring a disease and spread the disease you are not human yourself.................Stop the madness NOW!!

“Typically a bunch of leftist atheists who use church support groups to cover their activity and legitimize it.”

I doubt that. It sounds just like Huckabee’s stance on immigration and I haven’t heard anyone call him an atheist. He’s an evangelical Leftist, not an atheist Leftist.

Just for clarification it is an interfaith organization of various denominations - not just UMC. I just found the article on the UMC Portal.

The Methodists are talking to the wrong audience. The ‘human dignity’ issue really needs to be discussed with the Government of Mexico.

By desctructive attitude, they mean any opinion which differs from their own...

George Orwell Support Local number 1345 (”couched in Christian love and understanding”).

Let us start with having the illegals respect us, by respecting our laws, and by not requiring us to pay aid to them when I have never voted to authorize that aid, thus requiring me to pay higher taxes for schools, medical costs, public services, and many other areas.

I am out of cheeks to turn...

Why do we never hear these people advocating for an increase in LEGAL immigration? Why not enact social policy through laws which encourage the best and the brightest of other countries to immigrate here and help us build a society which serves the greater good of all the world? Why not, if we need more “ laborers”, create rules which bring us, as future brothers and citizens, those who want to be “Americans”?
