I thought Romney was the clear winner, most of all in demeanor and general impact. I've been critical of Mitt's television communication skills in the past, but last night he was Presidential and effective. A viewer who knew nothing about the status of the race would have assumed, I think, that Romney was the front-runner and perhaps the candidate with the most stature. Headlines suggest that the other candidates were ganging up on Romney. I think that is overblown; it happened on only a couple of occasions. On those occasions, I thought Romney came across as the candidate who is trying to rise above pettiness and focus on policy. McCain's anger toward Romney backfired, I thought. On a number of issues--health care and energy, and even national defense--Romney showed impressive command.

I don't care that Romney is a Mormon, but I do care that he dances around issues instead of speaking his mind. He's a phony, and he knows it.
So are the dozen or so sources that disagree with your thread.
Oh, and your emotional meltdown is getting wide readership too.
I’ve read all your posts. I don’t mind people supporting their candidates, even to the point of heatedness sometimes. We’re adults, we can argue our positions. What I don’t like is silly, personal attacks on either the candidates or their supporters. You’ve done both today, and you’re reaping what you sowed.
McCain looked like total scum. He knew Romney was pwning him on immigration and McCain could do nothing but throw out the tired old flip-flopper thing. Huckabee also looked slimy for the same reason.
Romney is far from perfect, but there are very good reasons why he’s higher on my list than those two pieces of garbage. I hope to God the voters saw McCain for what he is and cause a backlash on Tuesday.
And now a transparent attempt at reverse psychology.
You seem to be getting a little uncomfortable in the spotlight. Have you come to realize how inappropriate your earlier posts were? Perhaps you should apologize.
Look - you have me until you use the word “phony.”
It’s not true and not useful.
In fact, I’ll bet we could argue that all politicians are phony to some degree.
I’d rather look at the reality of the current political landscape.
What are all the Fred/Hunter folks going to do when their guys drop out?
Who’s their second choice?
I think Fred Thompson had a terrific night. (George Stephanopoulos, ABC)
Fred Thompson won the debate. (The Atlantic)
[Fred Thompson] came to play tonight. (ABC)
[Thompson] and McCain sound like the adults on stage. (The Atlantic)
Fred Thompson talking some serious substance too man, maybe I underestimated him. (ABC)
Every answer was thoughtful and well-crafted; his tone matched the tone of the question; he wisely refrained from interjecting in the back and forth squabbling. He very deftly reminded viewers that he served on key Senate national security panels and is bringing his experience to bear. (The Atlantic)
Still, it summed up what is likeable about Thompson - direct, clear, and logical. (National Review)
Thompson is excelling on policy and style. (The Atlantic)
Fred Thompson does get bonus points for intellectually honesty. (ABC)
Fred Thompson does a great job of making the free market case for health care, in contrast to Romneys statism. (American Spectator)
I think even the most ardent Romney supporters would agree that he didnt handle the question on his MA health-care plan all that well. There was a bit of a deer-in-the-headlights look when Thompson challenged him on the plan. (NBC)
[Romney] was backed into a corner on mandates in health care by Fred Thompson. (The Atlantic)
How could [Mitt] have let Fred Thompson best him on a debate over healthcare? (ABC)
BUMP!
You and I remember him losing, but the common tators said he won. That is where I see a resemblance. To Romney.
He sounded pretty bad with all of his rambling, although since Paul was there as well he looked a lot better in comparison, I guess.
This campaign has been too long! Its length and press coverage
has caused some voter to “leave the game and sit on the bench”. IMHO, there will be a whole new “team” of voters for the media to “sample” by the spring. This new “team” will be on Thompson’s side. This new “team” will see Thompson as a fresh start! Therefore, all the media will be reporting
how Thompson is surging.
Thank you for ignoring the posts I made to you about the provocative behavior by others.
Yep - It’s ALL my fault.
Typical black and white - all or nothing thinking.
He is simply unable to honestly speak his mind, and it was clear he wasn't even convincing himself.
How old are you ?
I wasn't ordering you to take action. I was merely suggesting that you make amends for your poor behavior, and as a result the spotlight might shift off your personal conduct on this thread.
Get lost.
Now who's acting like a father? It's a public forum...I'll go wherever I choose.
I don’t completely remember it that way.
I think the meme was that Bush won by “defying expectations” by not drooling on himself.
Am I right?
I just didn’t see it that way.
Rambling about what?
And I will apologize when I think it appropriate and I will decide what is poor behavior on my part - not you or anyone else.
See - that’s amazing to me.
I missed the interview, but I’ve read in numerous places that he did quite well.
