Huckabee retreats on birthright citizenship
Washington Times ^ | January 9, 2008 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 01/09/2008 6:45:10 AM PST by 3AngelaD

Mike Huckabee yesterday contradicted his own top immigration surrogate, announcing he will not support a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to illegal aliens.

It was a stark reversal after The Washington Times reported that James Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, said Huckabee promised to pursue an amendment to the Constitution. In an article in yesterday's editions, Huckabee's spokeswoman did not challenge the former Arkansas governor's statements to Gilchrist...But by yesterday afternoon, Huckabee had backed away..."I do not support an amendment to the Constitution that would prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens. I have no intention of supporting a constitutional amendment to deny birthright citizenship," Mr. Huckabee said...

The Times reported that Gilchrist, in a conversation while campaigning with Mr. Huckabee last week, pinned down the Republican presidential candidate on various immigration stances, including how he would address what most legal scholars see as the 14th Amendment's guarantee of citizenship to any person born in the United States, except for diplomatic situations.

Gilchrist said Huckabee promised to bring a test case to the Supreme Court...and would press Congress to pass an amendment to the Constitution.... Huckabee also said on CNN that he hasn't given much thought to the issue of birthright citizenship. But he previously had taken a position in an interview with The Times in Iowa in August.

"I would support changing that. I think there is reason to revisit that, just because a person, through sheer chance of geography, happened to be physically here at the point of birth, doesn't necessarily constitute citizenship," he said at the time, according to the audiotape of the interview. "I think that's a very reasonable thing to do, to revisit that."

"attacking babies"??? Not much for hyperbole, are you?
Changing a curious and easily-abused legal loophole is hardly an attack upon the defenseless.

Are you familiar with something called "politics"? It's very friendly to hyperbole.

I do think it's ridiculous that when we can't get laws passed and enforced to end illegal immigration people turn to going after babies.

Read up, Johnny. You know little or nothing about this. All you have is an uninformed emotion. Parents of anchor babies MOVE TO THE FRONT OF THE IMMIGRATION WAITING LINE ahead of people who have applied legally to get get in and who have waited in some cases 10 years. Because the children are citizens, they can apply to bring in ALL OF THEIR RELATIVES. The parents of the anchor baby immediately qualify for welfare, WIC, food stamps and Medicaid, unemployment benefits and get “affordable housing.” THEY HAVE BABIES ON AMERICAN SOIL TO CIRCUMVENT OUR LAWS, and we reward them with “special treatment.” This is why so many people are upset about birthright citizenship. Check out the sad history of Thomasson General Hospital in El Paso, Texas to see how this works. In many Texas hospitals, 70 to 80 percent of the newborns belong to ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. The rate is about 50 percent in California.

I completely agree... and the GOP is of the same mindset. Personality trumps everything... kill babies... no problem... Amnesty... no problem... seize guns... no problem... raise taxes... no problem... as long as you like the candidate and he is seen as a winner. I despise what our party is becoming... and it will not survive this new form of liberalism.

Here it is, nic. It is shocking. This kid committed an act that most serial killers admit to. He didn't just hang the dog (that would be bad enough), but he slit it's throat, and then stoned it!

The REALLY bad part of this story is that Huck (as Governor) covered for him, and prevented him from being arrested and prosecuted.

Well, truth be told, I read about that on SNOPES. According to SNOPES, the latter portion you mentioned is what is in dispute....nothing has been “proven” except that Huckabee’s son was involved, he was fired from the Boy Scout camp (or whatever) because “Boy Scouts must be kind,” and someone in Huckabee’s staff was later fired.

Of course, it doesn’t take much to “connect the dots” or a long leap to speculate that the “rest of the story” (as you stated) is likely true.

Pretty gruesome.

Uh, getting free hospital delivery, welfare, WIC, food stamps, and free education for a kid are benefits for the parent.

Why should this country have to support a child because its mother managed to waddle over the border before birth?

from your thread, yorkie (something else I didn't know about this same son):

8 months ago [i.e., April 2007]...the same son was arrested for carrying a gun onto an aircraft.

There's no reason to provide welfare benefits. That has nothing to do with birthright citizenship.

There's no reason to provide WIC benefits. That has nothing to do with birthright citizenship.

There's no reason to provide food stamps. That has nothing to do with birthright citizenship.

Free education only applies if the child is still here with its parents. There's no reason they should still be in America. That has almost nothing to do with birthright citizenship.

Probably not, but there just aren’t enough of them there yet. It will be interesting to see what happens in Michigan.

Son of presidential candidate pleads guilty for gun in airport.
David Huckabee, a son of presidential Republican candidate Mike Huckabee, was arrested at Little Rock's airport on Thursday after an X-ray technician found a loaded Glock pistol in his carry-on luggage. David Huckabee, who had a concealed weapons permit, was charged with having a weapon in a prohibited place. He later pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge in Little Rock District Court and was released from jail.
"I love my son but what he did was irresponsible, but not intentional. The right to carry a firearm has to be balanced with an equal responsibility to not make foolish errors like forgetting about it being in one's briefcase....
How does someone "forget" they put a loaded glock in their carry-on bags?????
