Rasmussen Report ^ | January 10, 2008 | Ramussen Report

Arizona Senator John McCain, fresh from his victory in New Hampshire, has taken a narrow three-point lead over former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee in the South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 27% and Huckabee at 24%.

That’s a significant change since last Sunday. Just before the New Hampshire vote, Huckabee was leading McCain 28% to 21%. In mid-December, Huckabee and Romney were tied for the lead with 23% of the vote while McCain was well off the pace at 12%.

There is a lot of evidence that Mccain does well among the Average Joe who does not pay attention to politics and who respond to his name recognition. This is one of the reason why Mccain does well in polls.

“Wow, Thompson is beating both Giuliani AND Ron Paul. If he can hold this fourth place position, this will be his best state yet!
The THOMPSON SURGE has begun!”

LOL. Dude, that’s just mean. =)

A long time ago McCain led in SC. I believe it was based upon the large number of veterans in the state. Does anyone know if that is true? Is that really a factor?

Please see post 127. McCain only needs about 30% of the vote to WIN in SC.

McCain running on foreign policy and against spending, Huckabee bringing in the Christian conservatives and gun owners who were never terribly comfortable with McCain.”

Yep.

I don’t like McCain, Giuliani, or Huckabee.

But...if it turns out that the Mc or Giuliani lead the ticket, they are most vulnerable with Huckabee’s base. It would only make sense to do as you note.

I suppose that is a ticket we could all get behind. But a Clinton/Obama ticket is going to be difficult to beat, no matter what.

I think you’re correct. I also think that the very thing that makes McCain poison here on FR, makes him attractive to those same average Joes. They see a candidate who tries to take the middle road and works on both sides of the aisle.

Well, I apologize then....sorry.

I’m just so frustrated with “what could have been” with Thompson. Great man, great conservative.

But the worst candidate in a long time.

This coupled by the complete lack of grasping reality at FR I find frustrating. It’s sort of like late October 06 when freepers were saying that the GOP was going to pick up seats in the House and Senate.....we all know how that turned out.

I think conservatives need to face reality and let liberals play “Let’s Pretend.”

And anyone thinking that Thompson is going to come even close to being the GOP nominee is pretending, at least at this point. Sure, that could change. But it would have to be pretty doggone dramatic.

“yes. you’re right about the geriatric thing.”

So it would be the “Geezer” ticket.
I still don’t see Fred taking a 2nd fiddle position. Too much Proud Southern Blood running through his veins. Or at least oozing through his veins. =)

I don’t know, but whoever made the point about his name recognition in a previous post, was spot-on. I just had to explain to my husband, who is otherwise a smart cookie, just why McCain is completely unacceptable. All he knew about McCain was “war hero”. He was dumbfounded when I enumerated just a couple of McCain’s positions, and said “That explains why (a liberal friend of his) likes him.” He said he should’ve guessed something was wrong, just from that, LOL.

Got it. Good point.

Since the 3-way vote will put in McCain, then serious conservatives should be calling for Thompson to move on and let one of the anti-McCain candidates stop him.

I don’t think Thompson is running to help McCain. But that could well be the net effect of his “interesting” campaign, shall we say.

Yesterday I posted that I had been in SC and had not heard Fred ads on AM radio station and had seen few Fred yard signs.

Today I am in North Carolina but while watching a TV station out of SC I saw my first Fred ad. Also saw a Mitt and McCain.

Fred does not seem to be saturating the air ways but I did see a newspaper article that said he would be doing several personal appearances.

If Fred does not win or come in a strong second in SC, I’m afraid that others will have too much momentum and he will have too much ground to catch up.

I would certainly be interested to know just why he is running, since it doesn't appear to be to win it.

“Well, I apologize then....sorry.”

No apology necessary. I was just ribbing you a little bit. I understood it to be humor. I agree that Freds bid for the presidency is on life support.

The full data:

Mike Huckabee 24%

John McCain 27%

Mitt Romney 16%

Fred Thompson 12%

Rudy Giuliani 6%

Ron Paul 5%

Some other candidate 2%

What I have noticed in Fred Thompson is that he looks like he's "strolling" instead of running for President. He really needs to show everyone he has the "fire in his belly" much more.

Please Fred will go after Mitt again. I don’t understand that. He really needs to go after Hucklebee IMHO.

“I would certainly be interested to know just why he is running, since it doesn’t appear to be to win it.”

Well it’s just my opinion, but I think Fred did want to be president. I just also think he thought it would be a lot easier than it has turned out to be. Part of that is probably because he was recruited to run and in the first days of his candidacy he was a front runner. He got lots of media attention then, but he never really hit the ground running even after he officially announced. It was more like he hit the ground moseying, and whatever head of steam he had from his name recognition and his early media boost just evaporated. he didn’t seem to find a sense of urgency untill the final weeks before Iowa, and after Huckabee started to poll well, IMO by then it was just a bit too late, and that lent credence to his critics position that he was old & tired& lazy.

Can McCain win SC? According to the latest Rasmussen (I know, take polls with a grain of salt after NH), he leads;
