State black bear unit busier in '07 ( New Jersey )
The Star-Ledger ^ | January 09, 2008 | FRED J. AUN

Posted on 01/10/2008 9:07:13 PM PST by george76

The number of black bears that got in trouble between late November and late December nearly doubled last year as compared to the same period in 2006...

In a report to the state Fish and Game Council, the division's five-member Black Bear Unit said it received 50 calls for assistance between Nov. 20 and Dec. 20. During the same period in 2006, the black bear unit fielded 27 calls.

The unit uses a category system to rank misbehaving black bears. The most nefarious activity -- such as unprovoked attacks on people or animals, entries or attempted entries into houses, tents and vehicles and destruction of bee hives -- warrant a Category 1 label.

Category 2 complaints are a bit less severe, including entry of campsites, getting into trash and provoked attacks on animals.

The black bear unit said it dealt with four Category 1 calls during the November-December period. During the same stretch in 2006, the biologists responded to only one Category 1 complaint.

The report says the unit was called out for 28 Category 2 calls, double the number for the period in 2006...

I suppose they are going to have to do something to keep the bear population in control.

Hunting is necessary, it’s now 100% certain that overnight campers in any of the northern state parks here will have a close encounter with a bear. Division of Fish and Wildlife isn’t even responding to Appalachian Trail thru-hikers phone reports, and the various clubs and groups that hikers use as reference as recommending body systems for the AT in NJ because of the bear threat. Division of Fish and Wildlife is run by a generation of people indoctrinated during their higher education and early careers, lead by political appointees who see themselves as masters of the doctrines. The state is a total mess regarding wildlife policy.

Maybe we could round the bears up & drop them off at Corslime’s office?

Another reason to bring a gun and ammo into the woods.

I’ve seen the bears down in south Jersey where we keep our summer trailer. So far none have come into our campground but we’ve seen them on the parkway & on back roads.

What are you defining as South Jersey? Here in true S Jersey we are operating under the belief the bears haven’t gotten here yet (Burlington County for example), but I hear of a sighting every so often.

Bear problem is because Corzine in his liberal idiocy is preventing the hunting that all wildlife professionals know is needed.

We saw one last summer on the side of the parkway by the Manahawkin exit. We also saw one in New Gretna right off of rt 9. People in our campground say that there are bears in Lower Bank too.

Believe it or not, from my perspective those places are now North Jersey (used to be South Jersey for me, too).

I am in Brick & when I was little this used to be the shore, now we call it central Jersey. We love the New Gretna area. I would move there in a heartbeat but our business is here. The riding is so much better down there then in Brick where the traffic is awful & I swear people are out to kill anyone on a motorcycle. You are lucky not to live up here.

I saw one 2 weeks ago on a backroad here in northern Morris County. I’ve seen 4 over the last few years, but all in the early AM. This one was roaming around at 11:30 AM. Probably a 200 lb female.

“The unit uses a category system to rank misbehaving black bears.”

When is the NAACP going to speak out against this racist profiling?

“Division of Fish and Wildlife isn’t even responding to Appalachian Trail thru-hikers phone reports, and the various clubs and groups that hikers use as reference as recommending body systems for the AT in NJ because of the bear threat.”

The obvious answer is to close the Appalachian Trail.
