(Gov. Rick) Perry vs. Romney (on Boy Scouts vs. homosexual activist groups)
WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | January 25, 2008 | Greg Pierce

Posted on 01/26/2008 10:36:22 AM PST by AFA-Michigan

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, has written a book about the Boy Scouts, and he includes a less-than-flattering story about Mitt Romney, suggesting that the Republican presidential hopeful bowed to the homosexual rights lobby during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Here is a portion of what Mr. Perry had to say about Mr. Romney in the new book...

"In 2000 (Romney) put out a published call for volunteers ... The Great Salt Lake Council of the BSA, the largest in the nation, with some 80,000 Scouts and 35,000 adult leaders, answered Romney's call for volunteers."

"Some time that fall, however, the Scouts were advised that they were no longer welcome to participate. Chief Scout Executive for the Council, Marty Latimer said, 'We don't understand what's wrong. They just don't want us and won't talk to us.' He said that Romney had not returned calls from several Scout executives seeking an explanation."

Maybe Romney didn't bow. Maybe he just bent over.

Citing a pro-Romney website and a paid Romney consultant as her source, Abbeville claims that Boy Scouts “couldn’t (participate in the Olympics) because volunteers had to be 18!”

Wow. If only we’d known. If only Salt Lake area Scout leaders had known.

Trouble is, if that were true, how difficult would it have been for the Olympics organizers to simply state that simple fact? Answer: not.

And as the Newsmax article you linked — written by LDS investigative journalist and Romney SUPPORTER David Bresnahan reported — Salt Lake area Scout leaders couldn’t even get their calls returned.

So how believable is it that it was all just a misunderstanding that went on month after month after month over the age requirement for volunteers.

Especially after Romney apologist Saundra Duffey assures us that “the article admits that the Scouts helped with clean up and other duties.”

Wait a minute. I thought the Scouts couldn’t help because they had to be 18. You Romney spinners need to get your stories straight.

I don’t know as much about Romney as I do about Perry. I do know that Perry has lied to us numerous times before.

“Wow, the McCainiacs are out in number today!”

Somepeople told me, somebody told them, that they hear Romney spit on the sidewalk when he was 16.

I love the Boy Scouts, I detest John McCain.

Poor Saundra: “Anyway, Mitt Romney does not deserve these low blows, cheap shots and creepy rumor mongering.”

Saundra, let’s be clear for the record. Are you accusing LDS investigative journalist David Bresnahan, who now supports Romney’s candidacy for president, of being guilty of “low blows, cheap shots, and creepy rumor mongering”? (see post 2)

Plus, I note you have not identified which of my truthful recitations in post 41 of Mitt’s record of support for homosexual activists’ political agenda you dispute.

Or perhaps by your silence you’re acknowledging that post 41 is a factual recitation of his record, but you don’t see anything objectionable about that record.

Which is it?

Simple solution for you, Free Paul.

If you don’t consider Perry a reliable source, read comment post 2 above, in which a Mormon journalist who now supports Romney’s campaign corroborates Perry’s story.

Or go to the story linked in post 79 for a second article by Bresnahan.

You are spreading the same load of BS that a bunch of narrow minded and vicious activists tried to spread in 2002.

It was countered and gained little or nothing for those activists then and it surely will not now.

But I can guarantee you that after this election is over, and we will likely lose it to Billary because of the internal grief in the base, that the finger pointing and pent up rage within the Republican party faithful against a certain class of the social right will be the least of your difficulties.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it because in 2009, you will not be allowed in the doorway, much less the rooms where the Republican party resides and it's been a long time in coming.

Your accusations are all false, and the premise you use that proclaims anything goes because the ends justify the means has been proved wrong, and dangerous, time and time again.

Have a nice day...............

Saundra, I too am a former Varsity Scoutmaster and an Eagle Scout, a member of the National Eagle Scouts Association, with two sons who are Eagles, a third who’s currently working on his Eagle project with the American Legion, and a 9 year old whose Pinewood Derby car we just finished yesterday.

My wife is a former den mother, packmaster, and member of the local Scout council board.

And his well-documented opposition to the Scouts’ common sense policy protecting boys from exposure to homosexual activity is the number one reason she’s not voting for Romney.

It’s only one of many elements of his record that are the reasons I’m not voting for him.

And I say that having personally managed or consulted the political campaigns of two or three dozen members of the LDS Church over the past 30 years.

This May, an LDS friend from Seattle and his wife will be staying at my home when their son-in-law graduates from Ann Arbor. In 1980, I managed his GOP primary campaign for the state House of Reps, in which he defeated an incumbent who was a Nazarene minister.

Mmmm...by the kneejerk reasoning of most Romney apologists on FR, does that make me an anti-Nazarene “bigot”?

http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2000/12/15/214301.shtml

Although Romney would not respond to repeated requests for an interview, Olympic Committee spokeswoman Caroline Shaw did call to deny that the Scouts have been turned away because of the gay controversy.

“The reality is we would love to take those volunteers, but we have an age requirement of our volunteers. I believe it’s 18,” Shaw said in a phone interview.

She said Scouts and their adult leaders were welcome to apply as volunteers individually on their own, as long as they don’t apply as a group representing the Boy Scouts.

They also may not work as a volunteer if they wear a Scout uniform, she said.

NewsMax.com learned that the claim of age is not quite accurate. There are children under 18 who will be a part of the Olympic ceremonies, but Olympic officials do not consider them to be volunteers. Instead they are called “cast members.”

Cold Heat: “Your accusations are all false.”

Cold, if ALL my accusations are false, you should have no difficulty whatsoever citing just ONE which you can document is false. Please note the operative use of the word “document.”

I stand ready to document, as I have meticulously in this thread, any statement I’ve posted.

And (LOL), good luck working the door to the GOP in 2009, where you promise to bounce social conservatives.

“The five sons are Ann’s DNA at work, not Mitt’s.”

Completely off-topic, but your statement may not be entirely correct.

There seems to be an increased percentage of female babies born to attactive parents.
There seems to be an increased percentage of female babies born to poor parents.
There also seems to be an increased percentage of male babies born to high testosterone fathers.

There is much left we don’t understand.

"He included them"

This is where we lose. ..we foolishly take on the loaded language of those whose only claim to separate identity is a chosen behavior. Once we do that, it becomes a "Gay rights" issue. . .those who oppose homosexual behavior for a host of VALID reasons are deemed "homophobic" Neanderthals in dire need of a lesson about the Constitution. I say NUTS!

I am against homosexual behavior regardless of who participates in it. British anthropologist J.D. Unwin in his study of over 80 civilizations spanning 5000 years of history found that no society, none, zilch, nada, has even endured once it relinquished the virtues of abstinence before marriage and fidelity within monogamous marriage. That is why there has never and will never be a civilization that endures after embracing homosexual behavior. It is the behavior that society should oppose in the interest of its longevity.

Guess that little email of yours didn’t quite work out the way you planned, huh? More Evangelicals voted for Romney than Huckabee in Michigan. Keep up the good work.

There are a lot of great social conservatives in the party. They are not narrow minded or bigoted against other religions, nor do they use divisive false allegations to achieve their ends.

Unfortunately, many are tarnished by the actions of a few. This is nothing new, nor will it ever be eliminated from party politics, but it is what it is.

Many mistakes have been made by factions in the party during the past 4 years and there is a price to pay for those that made them.

If the party loses in 2008, as they did in 2006, the price will be paid in full before the party can regroup and reorganize. Again....nothing new here.

I don't expect all this to happen before the 2014 midterm elections, and the trend should be obvious. It's all happened before. Ask Buchanan or Ron Paul. Ask the Paleocons, the Tories.

For the political party to survive, these sorts of things occur from time to time. The Dem's just finished their reordering, and we are next.

I don't expect you to believe me. If there was any chance of that happening you would not be doing what you are doing.

Romney is against discrimination in all its ugly evil forms.

Is excluding self-proclaimed homosexuals from the Boy Scouts an ugly evil form of discrimination?
