John McCain vs. the Right: No easy peace (What's a conservative to do?)
Michelle Malkin ^ | 1/30/08 | Michelle Malkin

Posted on 01/30/2008 6:23:38 AM PST by teddyballgame

Despite his longtime alienation of the Right on countless issues, John McCain secured a solid win in a closed Florida Republican primary and is assuming the air of inevitability. Many pundits have been urging John McCain to reach out to conservatives (how novel that would be). In response, he made a small point tonight in his victory speech of emphasizing judges–an olive branch, apparently, in the aftermath of the Alito/Fund kerfuffle.

Well. We hear what he says now. But we know what he has done for years:

Insult the base, trash the base, and pay lip service to the base only when it suits his needs.

The declaration that he is the “conservative leader who can unite the party” is yet another smack in the face to those who have watched him reach out and slap conservatives time and again–and then run to the warm, gooey embrace of the liberal media. Is it too much to ask to nominate a Republican candidate who is not as openly and historically hostile to the Republican base as CNN and (McCain’s endorsers at) the New York Times are?

Do you really think all the fawning press, Independents and moderates are going to carry McCain to victory in Nov. Think again, these same pundits wouldn’t vote for McCain if his hair was on fire. By the time the MSM and the Dems get through with McCain you’d think the guy needed a drool cup.

Dole lost in ‘96 because the base didn’t rally. Do you think McCain is suddenly going to? We’re screwed. Get use to the sound of President Hillary. You can thank cross-over (get it - they cross over because they’ll vote for Hillary in the Fall) voters.

Let’s face it we’re screwed. MCain victory in FL = President Hillary.

I don’t think so. In my opinion, McCain stands as good a chance in the general as any Republican against Hillary and better than most. In answer to the question: What is a conservative to do? My answer is that with a McCain v. Hillary or Obama race, we are almost guaranteed to have to fight the amnesty issue again in the next presidential term (unless McCain is serious about sealing the border first which may take more than a single term). Anyway, a conservative should be sure to join the anti-amnesty and border security organizations and get involved because that is McCain’s big heresy and one we need to be prepared to fight tooth and nail at the Congressional and Senate levels.

Agreed, if the delegates are foolish enough to nominate him then they’ll get the loss they deserve.

I will never vote for McCain.

If McCain is the Republican Party nomination for the
Presidency, then the real winner will be . . .

George Soros.

If McCain is the nominee I’m staying home.

If Hillary wins she will at least have to worry about facing unpopular opinion polls when pushing her liberalism

If McCain wins he will “reach out” to democrats and pass all sorts of liberalism and the sheeple will say “isn’t that great they’re all getting along”

It’s highly possible that a McCain presidency could do MORE damage to the country than a Hillary Presidency

So the losers were talk radio? Then the winners were talk TV, liberal press, etc, right? Those who 24/7 told the American people John McCain was their only real choice. Gushing, knee bending, orgasmic adoration and you want to talk about talk radio?

Excuse me, conservatives out here are not stupid.

Whether I vote for a nominee McCain or not, I sure as hell ain’t giving him any time or money.

Congratulations, 35% of Florida so-called Republicans.

“It is more like where our country has gone... left of middle!”

So true. I guess I’m in the minority now. After all this is a country that elected Bill Clinton twice. Sad days indeed.

I’m not worried.

If a non-conservative Republican gets into the White House, we will do what we always have done in that case. We will stand by our principles, support the good things he does, oppose the bad things he does, and wait for a future Presidential election when we can get a real conservative.

Remember the Harriet Miers nomination? We stood for what we believed and didn’t just cave in.

We will not be coopted or merged into the liberal wing of the party, we will just bide our time.

We should fight for the best candidate in the primaries, and if we get stuck with a non-conservative, we should vote for the lesser of two evils (Hillary or Barack being the other choice).

The conservative movement is bigger than this one election or one Presidential term. No need to fear.

McCain may be able to win a primary but without Conservative support he cannot win the presidency.

“we are almost guaranteed to have to fight the amnesty issue again in the next presidential term”

I’m not sure what you are talking about. A McCain or Hillary presidency guarantees amnesty. Where is the fight?

“It’s dissapointing the conservative base didn’t come out harder for Romney.”

The Huckster took a lot of those votes. He needs to drop out.

If McPain is the nominee, the drive-bys will savage him. there are plenty old bones in his closet. With Hitlery as pres, hopefully the Pubbies in Congress can rediscover their balls, and if the country survives the first 2 years we may get back conservative majorities. If McCain manages to get elected, look for the complete destroying of the Republican Party by the RINOs.

Dole lost in ‘96 because Bill Clinton ran a much better campaign, the economy was good, Clinton had acted “right” for 2 years after losing the Congress, and the second term scandals hadn’t broken yet. The “base not rallying” was not the major explanation in my opinion.
