Lauren Richardson Becomes Next Terri Schiavo as Parents Debate Euthanasia (Delaware)
LifeNews ^ | 2/1/2008 | Steven Ertelt

Posted on 02/01/2008 2:51:57 PM PST by Pyro7480

A Delaware woman has become the next Terri Schiavo as her parents engage in a massive legal and philosophical debate about whether to subject her to euthanasia. Richardson is a 23-year-old woman who overdosed on heroin in August 2006 while she was three months pregnant with a baby girl.

Doctors kept Lauren on life support until she delivered her baby in February 2007. Shortly thereafter, her parents began a fight that is reminiscent of the battle over Terri's life and death.

As in the Terri Schiavo case, physicians have been quick to label Lauren as having a persistent vegetative state -- something Terri's family called dehumanizing and medically inaccurate as patients have recovered from it.

Edith Towers, Lauren's mother, wants to remove her feeding tube and starve and dehydrate her to death in the same manner that Michael Schiavo subjected Terri.

Towers claims Lauren would never have wanted to live as a permanently disabled person, but Lauren, as with Terri, did not have a living will or other advance directive spelling out her treatment wishes. She claims Lauren told her during Terri's battle that she would not want to live like her.

On the other side is Randy Richardson, Lauren's father is fighting to save her life and wants to be appointed as her guardian to ensure she receives appropriate medical care and treatment.

"She's committed no crime and doesn't deserve to have this death imposed on her," Richardson told the News Journal newspaper on Wednesday. "We just want to give her a chance."

Lauren no longer uses a ventilator or other breathing apparatus and is not on artificial life support -- something Randy contends is showing progress.

Towers is winning the legal battle in court as she was awarded guardianship of Lauren, but Randy Richardson has filed an appeal.

The News Journal indicates Delaware Court of Chancery Master Sam Glasscock III has put any action taking Lauren's life on hold while the court reviews the guardianship ruling -- a process that could take as much as three months to complete.

Regardless of the decision, an appeal to the Delaware Supreme Court is expected.

Randy Richardson also has other concerns about his daughter and says that Towers, his ex-wife, has not allowed Lauren's baby to see her.

Richardson and the Delaware Pro-Life Coalition released a video on Wednesday that shows Lauren at a nursing home reacting to family members and a dog.

The pro-life group also organized a prayer vigil near the Arbors Rehab Center in New Castle.

Haleigh Poutre update...

As can be expected The Republican remains on top of news regarding Haleigh. This is from Buffy Spencer

..........................

SPRINGFIELD - Haleigh Poutre, the now 14-year-old Westfield child abuse victim who at one time was given no chance for recovery, is the source of fresh abuse allegations, according to court documents.

A motion filed in Hampden Superior Court by Alan J. Black, defense lawyer for Jason D. Strickland who is charged with assaulting the girl, states that Poutre is communicating new information to authorities about Strickland. A trial date of Oct. 11 for Strickland, of Westfield, was set yesterday.

Black wrote that it is clear to him that the victim "is now making statements alleging abuse by the defendant." Black said after the hearing that he is prohibited by the court from saying anything beyond what he wrote in the motion filed late last month.

No more information about the girl's condition is available because of the secrecy surrounding the events that have transpired since she was brought to Noble Hospital on Sept. 11, 2005, with a brain injury. The last public information given out about Poutre is that she was receiving therapy at the Franciscan Hospital for Children in Boston and remained in the custody of the state Department of Social Services. Family members said in late 2006 that she was eating on her own, writing her name and was beginning to speak.

Poutre's biological mother, Allison L. Avrett, of Agawam, declined yesterday to discuss Poutre's condition or any related matter. She referred questions to her lawyer, Betsy Clague, who could not be reached for comment.

Strickland and his wife, Haleigh's adoptive mother and biological aunt, Holli A. Strickland, were arrested and charged with assault after the girl was hospitalized. Holli Strickland died within a month in what West Springfield police said was a murder-suicide with her grandmother.

Jason Strickland is charged with assault and battery on a child with substantial bodily injury, assault and battery on a child with bodily injury, three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of assault and battery. He has pleaded innocent to all charges.

The Strickland case received much attention because Poutre was initially the subject of an attempt by the state to remove a feeding tube that was keeping her alive. The Department of Social Services, acting on medical advice that Haleigh had no hope of recovery, at first wanted to remove a feeding-tube that was keeping her alive. The state's Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the life support measures could be withheld. But before the decision to end life support was implemented, Haleigh began to improve.

In his motion asking for a trial date, Black wrote that he has received new child abuse reports from District Attorney William M. Bennett's office with fresh allegations concerning his client. He said he needs to prepare several types of motions in order to further investigate these reports and the charges which could result.

The reports create issues concerning the girl's competency, her ability to testify and recall events "in light of her severe head trauma," Black wrote.

Bennett could not be reached for comment, and Assistant District Attorney Laurel H. Brandt, the prosecutor assigned to the case, directed questions to Black saying it was his motion.

DSS spokesman Richard A. Nangle also refused comment, saying the department is prohibited by the court from discussing Poutre's condition.

Judge Bertha D. Josephson, during the court's status conference at which the trial date was selected, said she expects a response within the next two weeks on what judge will be specially assigned to the case. Black and Brandt requested a judge be named to oversee the case. The next conference date is March 11.

In another motion, Black said he plans to file a motion to have the case moved to a different county.

Court documents released in the right-to-life case in 2006 as a result of action by The Republican showed that DSS had argued Poutre had "the least amount of brain function that a person can have and still be considered alive." As a result of the brain injury and stroke occurring later, "the child has no hope of any meaningful recovery," according to the brief filed by a DSS attorney.

More about Haleigh, again from The Republican...

BOSTON - The state Senate unanimously approved yesterday a bill that would create an advocate for children in the governor's office and impose other systemic changes aimed at preventing child abuse.

The Senate voted 36-0 to approve the bill, which was crafted in response to the case of Haleigh Poutre, who, despite oversight from the state Department of Social Services, was hospitalized with a brain injury and her adoptive mother and stepfather charged with abuse............

We have seen now how the Terri Legacy has impacted the far far leftist candidate in his quest to be our ruler. People have ridiculed us pursuing a futile cause, yet it is they who bear the grim obsession. It now emerges from under the turban, the face behind the mask.

But who does this guy Soros count in his gaggle of cronies?

If we still do not think we are under siege from the dark side, consider this thread by wagglebee.

...................

George Soros is a big fan of euthanasia and assisted suicide and wants to see it legalized everywhere. Toward this end, Soros has donated millions to groups promoting the cause--which I believe to be an ultimately abandoning policy that implicitly tells people with terminal illnesses and other serious conditions that their lives are not as valuable or worth protecting as those of other people.

The assertions made by Soros in this feature about his philanthropy around issued of death and dying, are, I think, quite telling about his ultimately disdainful perspective about people who are approaching the end of their lives:

"Death has replaced sex as the taboo subject of our times," said one of the world's richest men and leading philanthropists, George Soros, when he launched the Project Death in America fund at Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1994. It promotes euthanasia or assisted suicide, and has been succeeded by the Open Society Institute's International Palliative Care Initiative . Soros's mother committed suicide, as a member of the Hemlock Society. His father died a lingering death from cancer, and Soros was "disappointed" at the way the old man clung miserably to life.........................

Poor hand wringing NARAL...

Thread by wagglebee.

Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) -- The Washington affiliate of NARAL issued the results of a new study earlier this month complaining that not all pharmacies in the state stock the morning after pill or have pharmacists willing to dispense the drug. The writers of a pro-life blog contacted the director of the group, who made some rather surprising comments about abortion..............

The leader of the free world should never regret saving life. Soros funded McCain too and McCain also indicated in debates he would have let Terri be killed too. THAT is just one reason I will never vote for McCain.

www.baynews9.com mentioned TERRI SCHIAVO on this morning’s news. I don’t know if they bothered to publish it on line. If OBAMA wants to discuss Terri’s death in the campaign, bring it on. It’s going to help Huckabee, especially if this comes up in future GOP debates or in the general election. Obama and McCain are both euthanazi’s, receiving funds from GEORGE SOROS, the social engineer extraordinaire whose destroying our country.

If the death culters were on this thread, they would be saying that since she is in jail, she doesn’t actually deserve proper medical treatment.

I have heard all sorts of disgusting remarks about Lauren because she is an addict and many were speculating that Javona’s operation was an abortion. Then they start whining about who is going to pay for it and even when you demonstrate that this isn’t an issue (it certainly doesn’t seem to be with Lauren’s family), they keep bringing it up.

There bloodlust is insatiable.

WAS OBAMA LYING LAST NIGHT IN THE DEBATE? In an earlier debate it's alleged that he said "he left in advance of the vote on Terri Schiavo." If that's on the congressional web site that he SKIPPED THAT VOTE, he lied and is using Terri Schiavo to garner votes from the far left. Read this from a blogger transcription of an early debate:

Another Q from viewers: biggest professional or personal mistake? Gravel gets it. This should be good. Says he's the senior statesman up there and was beginning to feel like a potted plant. Then he tries to use Ronald Reagan's "youth and inexperience" line to no effect. Kucinich says his biggie was firing the police chief on the 6:00 news when he was mayor of Cleveland. Hillary says not enough time to list all of hers, but ends with "believing the president when he said he'd go to the U.N. on Iraq."

Barack says he shouldn't have left the Senate in advance of the Terri Schiavo vote.

FV ASKS, what does that mean? If he LEFT in advance, how'd he vote for her??????? OBAMA'S VOTING RECORD is in order. We need a volunteer.

I don’t get it. Saying that he would have voted to let Terri be murdered won’t get Obama any votes he wouldn’t get to begin with, UNLESS they are now worried that Ralph Nader is going to start siphoning off too many of the far left voters.
