Grateful Dead Grateful for Obama (Truckin, down a dead end street)
Fox News ^ | 2/5/2008 | Fox News

The remaining members of the Grateful Dead — probably the most prolific and enduring psychedelic rock band — have gotten together once again, but this time to endorse Barack Obama for president.

The usually apolitical group waded into the presidential campaign Monday in a press conference and a concert that melded the old with the new. The show began with a recorded video message by Obama in which he thanked the members of the band for their support. A fog of marijuana hung over the crowd, the Reuters news agency reported.

“A fog of marijuana hung over the crowd, the Reuters news agency reported.”

But no one inhaled.

A decent human being would reject this “endorsement.”

"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are," Cooper also remarked. "Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."---Alice Cooper

Actually, Jerry would never endorse any candidate, which is why this is annoying (one reason, anyway). Quotes from Captain Trips himself:

But when it came to leading the multitudes, Garcia was unambiguous: "Our trip was never to go out and change the world. I mean, what would we change it to? Whatever we did would probably be worse than the way it is now."

The Dead insisted they had no message. But Garcia once summed up a most admirable anti-message about what the Dead experience meant: "A combination of music and the psychedelic experience taught me to fear power. I mean fear it and hate it."

Part of a good article in Reason magazine.

"probably the most prolific and enduring psychedelic rock band"

I believe Pink Floyd would take exception to that.

I love the Dead & all, but I wouldn’t look to them for advice on who to vote for (or anything else in life). Anyone for whom this would have an impact is already firmly in the democrat column.

But then again, they’ll probably be too baked to go vote.
