Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet
Malibu Arts Reviews ^ | February 1 | Kriss Perras Running Waters

The National Geographic Channel (NGC) will begin airing on February 10 a new environmental show titled Six Degrees. NGC in a statement on the man who inspired the show says, "In possibly the most graphic treatment of global warming yet published, noted science writer and 2006 National Geographic Emerging Explorer Mark Lynas explains in his latest book, Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet, how Earth’s climate will be impacted with every degree of increase in temperature—and what we need to do about it, now, to avert disaster." If Katrina bothered you not just because of the environmental issues but also the failed government response, then Six Degrees is a show you should watch.

The National Geographic Channel is making a big push around this show. It's based on the book, Six Degrees by Mark Lynas.

This is likely to be one of the worst pieces of fictious global warming propoganda ever. It may even be worse than Gore's movie.

Lynas is an extreme kook. He's the guy who threw a pie at Bjorn Lomborg, stating afterwards, "I wanted to put a Baked Alaska in his smug face in solidarity with the native Indian and Eskimo people in Alaska who are reporting rising temperatures, shrinking sea ice and worsening effects on animal and bird life."

Lynas isn't too concerned with truth either. When a UK judge ruled that Gore's movie had too much propoganda, lies, and errors to be shown to children, Lynas said it didn't matter. He said, "All these points, however, are trivial in the context of the film's main argument, which is unambiguously correct in its portrayal of mainstream scientific understanding of climate change."

Lynas continued, "Hence the need to move the debate from science and towards precaution. It is now very likely that global warming this century will present major challenges to the survival of human civilisation - and to our children's and grandchildren's lives. If we listen to the deniers, we are taking a very dangerous gamble - a bit like playing Russian roulette with five bullets and only one empty chamber."

So what about his documentary? In one of the preview clips, he made the ludicrous claim that automobiles generate 20% of greenhouse gases.

Ironically, the entire premise of his book and movie are based on the most extreme temperature projection from the 2001 IPCC report, which fall outside of the best estimates from the latest IPCC report. The 2007 IPCC report's best estimate for temperature between now and 2100 is 1.8 deg C to 4.0 deg C. The IPCC ignored the most recent findings showing the mistakes Hansen made and the embarrasing GISS revisions. It also doesn't account for the Urban Heat Island Effect properly because it relies on the allegedly fraudulent research of Wei-Chyung Wang.

What are his solutions? Try carbon rationing.

"Only a top-down carbon rationing scheme can deliver a predetermined outcome with any certainty," claims Lynas

"Top-down" sounds involuntary because that's what Lynas means. "Imposed it must be, as participation could not be voluntary."

What do you bet the documentary skips Lynas' prescription for rationing personal energy use?

I really believe that these people can’t separate real life from movies and fiction.
Everyone loves a disaster movie and everyone loves to imagine what life would be like after extreme catastrophes and such, but these supposed smart people are having trouble differentiating.

WELL STATED.

This is fiction, not fact.

So now we are back to global “warming”? It must be that summer is coming back at the NG home office.

The mushheads in the media have been using the term “Global change” in the last few months since winter started up again. And in the 70s it was global cooling.

The socialist pinheads are bound and determined to put a stop to the free market whatever lies it takes to get it done.

I generally like NatGeo TV, but their global warming programming keeps me from watching. Write them and express your opinion about this.

“If Katrina bothered you not just because of the environmental issues but also the failed government response.”

The most OVERRATED disaster in world history.

What there was of it should read “failed preparation by
New Orleans and Louisiana government.”
The good people of Mississippi never complained and went on with their lives. Nagin and his chocolates are still whining and sucking the public teat.

I don't see any SCIENCE education for Mark Lynas. I guess science was too difficult a study for the jackass.

"Mark Lynas was born in Fiji in 1973, and grew up in Peru, Spain and the UK. After gaining a first-class honours degree in history and politics from the University of Edinburgh (where he also edited the university's student newspaper), he joined a web start-up called OneWorld.net - helping turn it into the world's most-accessed internet portal for human rights and sustainable development issues. He was also active in the flourishing environmental direct action scene during the late 1990s, joining road protests and helping mount 'decontamination' exercises against genetically-modified crops, as well as participating in Reclaim the Streets protests in London and Oxford.

Since leaving OneWorld in 2000 to work full-time on climate change, Mark has also been active as a broadcast commentator and journalist, writing for the Guardian, Observer, New Statesman and various other publications, as well as appearing on radio and television news and discussion programmes ranging from Newsnight to the BBC World Service. His book High Tide: The Truth About Our Climate Crisis was published by Flamingo/HarperCollins on March 1, 2004. He lives in Oxford, but has given talks and presentations on climate change and his travels for High Tide as far away as the United States and Australia.
