BREAKING: Romney to endorse McCain tonight?
politicker md ^ | 2-7-08 | Editor

The Dewey Loman American Legion Post 109 is the place to be tonight for Maryland Republicans.

That’s where presidential candidate Sen. John McCain and ex-presidential candidate Mitt Romney are both scheduled to speak this evening in Halethorpe Maryland.

Romney was previously scheduled to attend the event, while McCain announced his surprise appearance this morning.

And just minutes ago, McCain’s campaign put out word that the Arizona senator would be picking up “a major endorsement” at this evening’s Baltimore County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner.

Minutes later, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney announced he would be ending his bid for the White House.

One source with knowledge of tonight’s event tells PolitickerMD.com that former Gov. Bob Ehrlich will not be the one introducing McCain before the presidential candidate delivers brief remarks; however, Ehrlich aides say he will be announcing his endorsement this evening.

But does an Ehrlich endorsement qualify for a national teaser endorsement at this stage of McCain's campaign? We think not.

There are implications that Romney, who has been locked in a bitter fight with McCain, would make the quick endorsement with the hope of unifying their party.

According to an advance text of his speech to the 2008 CPAC conference obtained by Time’s Mark Halperin, Romney said, “I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know.”

“But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win.”

We’ve been had; here we were all this time, out there pacing the sidewalk waiting for the arrival of a fresh new face when, instead of the nurse coming out with our brand-new bundle of joy, the old bat sweeps out the back door trailing great clouds of stale, sour smoke and sets this wizened old fool at our feet while all the mid-husbands stand there like old tom tabbys caught in a stinky corner when the light is flipped on.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Romney endorsed McCain. I seriously doubt he’d endorse Hillary or Obama.

Doesn’t mean conservatives should fall in lockstep just because a liberal backs a moderate.

I’ll take a wait and see attitude on McCain. November is a long time away.

How is it patriotic to endorse someone who will guarantee a rat victory in November? Dole was a fairly decent man without McCain's baggage of betrayal and he didn't sell. McCain won't sell either.

Fear of a Clinton Bogey man didn't work then and it won't work now. With McCain, there is nothing to vote for. Just fear of the Bogey man. I'll pass.

He would MURDER Hillobama on WOT, irresponsible spending, corruption, lobbyist money.......

They would be scrambling to find their own responsible old guy.....just like they did when W put Cheney on the ticket.

But guess what.....last time they found Leiberman.....who would be standing behind McCain this time......

NONE of their usual attacks that work pretty well against most Republicans would work against him........

What are they going to accuse him off? Mean Spirited Conservative Republican? LOL!

Look at it this way, Hillary is now free to appoint someone other than Obama to the Supreme Court.

The Night They Drove Old Reagan Down

John McCaine is my name and I drove on the Strait-Jacket Express
‘til so much journalists came and tore up the sleeves again
In the winter of 2008, we were hungry, just barely alive
I took the bus to California that fell
It was a time I remember, oh, so well

The night they drove old Reagan down
And all the liberals were drinkin’
The night they drove old Reagan down
And all the Moonbats were singin’
They went, “Na, na, na, na, na, na, .... “

Back with my wife in Washington DC
And one day she said to me,
“Johnny, Quick! Come see!
There goes Hillary!”
Now I don’t mind, I’m chopping wood
And I don’t care if the money’s no good
Just take what you need and leave the rest
But they should never have taken the very best

The night they drove old Reagan down
And all the liberals were drinkin’
The night they drove old Reagan down
And all the Moonbats were singin’
They went, “Na, na, na, na, na, na, .... “

Like my father before me, I’m a working man
And like my brother before me, I took a rebel stand
Oh, he was just 18, proud and brave
But a yankee laid him in his grave
I swear by the blood below my feet
You can’t raise a Cane back up when he’s in defeat

The night they drove old Reagan down
And all the liberals were drinkin’
The night they drove old Reagan down
And all the Moonbats were singin’
They went, “Na, na, na, na, na, na, .... “

Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train
‘Til Stoneman’s cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of ‘65, we were hungry, just barely alive
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell, it’s a time I remember oh so well

The night they drove Old Reagan down and the liberals were swinging
The night they drove Old Reagan down and the Moonbats were singin’, they went
La-la-la la-la-la, la-la-la la-la-la, la-la-la-la

The night they drove Old Reagan down and the liberals were swinging
The night they drove Old Reagan down and the Moonbats were singin’, they went
La-la-la la-la-la, la-la-la la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Like my RINOs before me, I will work the wheels
And like my brother TED before me, who looks to make deal

It was just five eighteen, and needing a shave
But a Chivas laid him in his grave
I swear by the mud below my feet
You can’t raise a Kennedy back up when he’s in deceit!

I think since Romney “suspended” his campaign, he retains them for now.

Why would you transcribe the Joan Baez version with its incorrect lyrics?

I'm fighting this battle as much for them, as for us.

You better THINK!!!

“The country is NOT conservative.”

I tend to think that it still is. It just that nobody has done a suitable job of defining conservatism.

If, on the other hand, it could be true, then the death of conservatism can be laid squarely at the feet of Republicans we elected thinking that they were conservative.

I’ll not vote for another destroyer. period

I'm sure those that were supporting Romney's candidacy are feeling pretty down right now, so please don't take this as a slam folks.  I know that it will be hard to see these postulations in the light in which they were intended, so make your comments if you feel so inclined.

If Romney does endorse McCain tonight, won't that be rather indicative of the premise that he was never as conservative as some thought he was?

If you are a true die-hard conservative, can you possibly back a guy like McCain?  I sure can't.

BTW folks, I think Romney was head and shoulders better than McCain, but I did not see him as a conservative.  I could not back him.  That being said, I have tried not to dump on anyone for being able to.  I have tried to discuss what my views of him were though.

This is actually a sad day for me too.  It is now clear that a man like John McCain can be chosen to lead our party, and most if not all the leaders of our party will endorse him.  This is no longer the party I joined in 1969, as soon as I became eighteen years of age.  And this afternoon I will be registering as an Independent.  I'm fed up!

We can get rid of Hill/Bill and keep them out of the White House by crossing over and voting for Obama. WE HAVE A CHANCE TO GET RID OF THEM NOW!!!

Rush is pushing Clinton because he wants to keep her on his radio show. HE IS UNDERESTIMATING THE CLINTONS.

If Hill wins the General she wil lie cheat and steal to beat the Repub.
Obama is very much less likely to.
