Could be, but doesn't McCain do pretty well in the northeast himself?

I'm not certain McCain could hold onto all the southern red states if he didn't have a southerner on the ticket with him, especially if he has to face Obama. The south has a very large black population after all.

I like Romney a lot, but I don't think Mitt is the right fit for McCain. Mitt doesn't fit like a glove. lol
