Did Obama Play the Age Card Against McCain?

February 11, 2008 8:51 PM

In Baltimore, Md., today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said the following about presumptive GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.:

"Listen," Obama said, "I respect John McCain for his half century of service to this country. He is a genuine war hero, and we need to honor him for that. He has gone through things that most of us cannot even imagine. He deserves applause, he deserve our respect. But he is on the wrong side of history right now. He wants to perpetuate the Bush economic agenda that has failed working Americans ... I am happy to have a debate with John McCain, because we are the party of tomorrow, he’s the party of yesterday. He’s the past, we’re the future."

ABC News producer Andy Fies has covered Obama a great deal, and says that, while Obama has used this construction about John McCain before -- "I respect John McCain for his half century of service to this country" -- it didn't really stand out before.

Today, however, Obama, 46, punched the "half century" line just a little more at both of his rallies, Fies says -- and the crowd noticed and reacted with some laughter.

Fies adds that, in past speeches, this line slipped by. But today, it stood out, and the audience clearly seemed to think Obama was joking that McCain is too old ... even though the dig (if intended) was encased in words of praise.

The comment, Fies says, seemed designed to portray the 71-year-old McCain as a museum exhibit, a relic.

What do you think? We'll post the video as soon as we can.

I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience. If I still have time, I might add, Mr. Trewhitt, I might add that it was Seneca or it was Cicero, I don't know which, that said if it was not for the elders correcting the mistakes of the young, there would be no state. -- Ronald Wilson Reagan

In this case, McCain needs to say, "To quote a favorite President of Mr. Obama and myself, I'm not going to speak against my opponents youth and inexperience...."

That's a bad paraphrase of the Reagan quote, but you get the idea.

Yes, he did. I noticed that as soon as Obama said it and told my husband that it was a dig.

Maybe McCain should start referring to Obama as a “credit to his race” out on his stump speeches.

Oh wait, I think Joe Biden already did that.

Well, since Obama is raising the issue, maybe McCain can respond with this, “Barack Hussein Obama has spent 40% of his life worshiping in a mosque. Isn’t it nice that the USA is so tolerant of his Muslim background?”

I really don’t want to give control of my country to the next generation. Socialist propaganda and indoctrination through the public education system has wreaked havoc on America.

Message to those younger than me: Get married, have kids (lots), and keep them the heck away from the NEA.

John S. McCain, III was serving his country as a naval officer, before Mr. Obama was even born conceived.

You are correct McLame should do that. Then his friends in the MSM would laugh his tired worn-out old ass out of the country.

“We’re (the Democrats) are the party of tomorrow.”

They’ve been saying this for the last 40 years. Their ideas are the same too: socialism and surrender. But maybe this new generation is dumb enough to buy it. God help us all.

And McCain was a resident of the Hanoi Hilton while Barack was attending that so-called “secular madrassah” in Indonesia.

NOW...THAT would be a COMEBACK from McCain..... "Well...my friend, Barack Obama, you were a student studying in a madrassah in Indonesia when I was a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton. Seems as though you still have not learned much of our ways here in the U.S. either, i.e. about freedom, and how to expand it, not obliterate it!"

Not me. The 'age card' is not a card, it's a real consideration, especially with the senility McCain has already shown (..."the President of Germany, Putin"...) combined with his horrible judgment on the issues, and whatever psychological damage is now innate due to his torture in captivity.

McCain up against Obama is going to be a real route. Unfortunately, it won't be the last of McCain. Either Obama will appoint him to some cabinet position or McCain will lead the effort to 'cross party lines' in Congress, and author major 'compromise' legislation for Obama to sign.
