Kosovo's parliament has been called into emergency session to formally declare independence from Serbia.

"We have to take decisions on the future of our nation," Prime Minister Hashim Thaci told reporters. MP's are expected to meet at 1400 GMT.

The US and a number of EU countries are expected to recognize Kosovo on Monday.

Serbia has threatened Kosovo with diplomatic and economic sanctions, but not force. Its ally, Russia, also opposes Kosovan independence.

Correspondents say the potential for trouble between Kosovo's Serbs and ethnic Albanians is enormous.

Serbia's Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica is to make a televised address at 1500 GMT.

"We are on the brink of a very crucial moment-an important decision that will make us one of the free nations of the world," Mr. Thaci told the media as he read the letter sent to the speaker of parliament, Jakup Krasniqi, to request the special session.

He said the MP's would approve the declaration of independence and would vote on the state symbols...

Nuts.
Just hope this new cold war doesn’t go hot. But Russia is very protective of other Orthodox Christians, and the US seems to be very protective of muslims these days.

ball is now in Russia’s court - are we going to just see talk or will there be action. There are plenty of tools at Putins disposal other than direct intervention in Pristina. Georgia and the Ukranie come to mind

US seems to be very protective of muslims these days.

Which is insanity. Both National interests of us and the Russians would be served if a POTUS and POTRF would hold a joint news conference and announced Reaganesque style -- "We have declared that Islam is illegal. The nuking begins in 5 minutes."

And let the Basques secede from Spain, the Bretons from France and the Kurds from Turkey. I voted for Bush twice, but if he's not doing his utmost to stop s**t like this, he really is as stupid as his critics have been claiming.

That our state department is supporting crap like this should prompt congressional hearings, not some aging athlete shooting steroids.

We in America get leaders who couldn’t lead an orgy in a bathhouse or at best a Habitat for Humanity crew leader if we are lucky, and the Russians get chess players. Kosovo is a lever waiting to be pulled a knight to be moved.

"Reading this headline, feels eerily like reading Saddam Hussein’s tanks had crossed the border into Kuwait.

Except the last time with Kuwait we were defending the sovereignty of an undemocratic state. This time we are spitting on the sovereignty of a democratic state.

Given his refusal to enforce our immigration laws, I can't imagine that he'd have a problem with that. Although it will more likely go back to Mexico instead of becoming independent, so I guess that's the difference...

“Nor, in our view, has Washington or Berlin grasped that a confrontation is exactly what the Russians are looking for.”

I am amazed the EU and US are not openly responding to this obvious reality and trying to keep the kosovo issue dragging out for as many years as possible. I am strongly tempted to believe their internal planning doesn’t account for it either.

Violence Sparked By Kosovo’s Split

Updated:18:27, Sunday February 17, 2008

Hand grenades have been thrown at EU and UN buildings in the Kosovan city of Mitrovica, after Kosovo declared its independence with European backing.

Meanwhile, hundreds of ultra-nationalist Serbians rallied outside the US Embassy in Belgrade, prompting the EU to call for calm.

it may not be simply a religious/ethnic view. Which politician would indirectly benefit the most from the mafia in albania/kosovo which would be able to sustain their current activities/imports?
