California exodus turns to stampede

WASHINGTON – California, which once lured Americans from near and far, is now driving out millions of the most productive residents – including high percentages of the most affluent.

"When California faced a Mount Everest-sized $14 billion deficit in 2003, one of the major causes for the red ink was the stampede of millionaire households from the state," says a report called "Rich States, Poor States" by economists Arthur Laffer and Stephen Moore. "Out of the 25,000 or so seven-figure-income families, more than 5,000 left in the early 2000s, and the loss of their tax payments accounted for about half the budget hole."

And it's not just the rich leaving.

Based on data from moving companies, California had the second-highest domestic population out-flow of any state in 2005, according to the report, "despite the beautiful weather, beaches, and mountains."

The bad news for California is that it faces $14 billion deficit this year, despite boasting one of the highest tax burdens in the nation.

The report, published by the American Legislative Exchange Council shows jobs are not just leaving the country – they are moving from state to state, with the population following.

"States are in direct competition with each other for human capital and business investment. State governments that think they can attract jobs and people, and grow their economies, by taxing their citizens at a higher rate than their neighbors are sadly mistaken," said Democratic Arkansas state Sen. Steve Faris, ALEC's 2008 national chairman. "Legislators should take a close look at where their state ranks in this book and use it as a tool to help them improve."

Both born and raised in So CA, my wife and I bailed out of CA in 1995. We haven’t looked back. For us it was when my oldest son started kindergarten and he was one of 46 kids in a class. They were teaching him how to read using “whole word” techniques and Spanish part time. When he began 1st grade in the Midwest he needed to be tottered because he was so far behind.

Oh, the Midwest sucks. It’s always cold. You wouldn’t want to live here. Don’t consider it. Stay out west where it’s warmer.

If you'd take the time to read the thread...you'd realize I was only comparing California's *largest* city to other states *largest* cities

No, you weren't. Florida's largest city is not Miami, it's Jacksonville. Tennesee's largest city is Memphis, not Nashville. Virginia's largest city is Virginia Beach, not Richmond.

Two to keep your eye on: Costa Rica and Belize.
In Belize, BTW, the official national language is ... English.

The flight from California is not good news for the rest of the nation. The refugees bring California with them wherever they go.

So true! They escape California but bring their liberal voting habits with them. They don't seem to get the connection between liberalism and what California has sadly become.

The comparison was on your stated terms...largest to largest. It’s the largest city in VA, which was what you said you were comparing.

You had no problem comparing OK City to LA. OK City’s population is 537,734. VA Beach’s is 425,257. Now, because VA Beach’s stats are lower than LA’s, you moan that it’s too small of a city?

The upside of this is people in Colorado now hate Californians more than Texans.

Pretty amazing that Indianapolis Indiana has substantially more crime per capita than L.A. Cal...I was as surprised as you were.

Duh. When Ohio lost the jobs at Hoover the media 'rat-bastards whined and raged about jobs going to mexico. In fact, they went to Iowa. You can't trust a single damn thing the 'rat media tries to cram down your throat.

Seems as though the liberal elite have nothing better to do than to focus on taking others peoples' monies and then telling them what they can or cannot do.

Well yeah....what the hell else IS there to being a liberal?

Well, the good news is that they are importing plenty of poor people from Mexico to replace them.

LOL. Perfect solution. Turn Colleyforrnia into Meeshigan--or Ohio, or some other rustbelt backwater.

Make that $16 billion and rising at a rate of $400 million a month.

You had to go 3 hours away from Indianapolis to find another city? You should have gone 2 hours south and you could have been in Louisville, KY or Cincinnati, OH.

3 hours south of Los Angeles, I could be in the wonderful city of Tijuana, Mex.

I don’t know who you are trying to convince but So Cal is a cesspool. I returned for Xmas after 6 years gone and could not believe how fast things are going downhill. Target and Montclair mall were very eye opening.

If you still enjoy it, congrats. I hope it works out for you. However, your tax base is leaving and more illegals and other people looking for free handouts are arriving.

The Midwest is too cold. Make sure you tell everyone in California that.
