NEW YORK (AP) - For many black Americans, it's a conversation they find hard to avoid, revisiting old fears in the light of bright new hopes. They watch with wonder as Barack Obama moves ever closer to becoming America's first black president. And they ask themselves, their family, their friends: Is he at risk? Will he be safe?
There is, of course, no sure answer. But interviews with blacks across the country, prominent and otherwise, suggest that lingering worries are outweighed by enthusiasm and determination.
"You can't have lived through the civil rights movement and know something about the history of African-Americans in this country and not be a little concerned," said Edna Medford, a history professor at Washington's Howard University.
"But African-Americans are more concerned that Obama get the opportunity to do the best he can," she added. "And if he wins, most of us believe the country would do for him what it would do for any president, that he will be as well protected as any of them."

Totally agree. They will probably get some crazed KKK type to do it. Hate to think it's possible, but giving the body count surrounding the Clintons and how bad they want back in the Whitehouse you can't rule it out.
The Dems and the Left would make an all-out effort to suppress such an event. They know what the response would be from Middle Class America.

Mark my words. Somebody on the left WILL spray racists epithets or hang a noose or something like that on one or more Obama campaign office in order to garner sympathy. The press will be all over it like ugly on Helen Thomas but when they finally capture the perp and prove he is a ‘Rat operative, you won’t hear a word on the LSM.

You just stated something that I've had in the back of my own mind for awhile - That the recent spate of Nooses (And other Race things) is being done by the race hustlers. The Obama candidacy threatens to put a lie to their reason for being and their income/power.
He might want to stay clear of Vidor (Texas).

His wife expanded upon that months ago; you see, as a black man Senator Obama cannot even go to the service station to get gasoline without the danger of being murdered.
(So why don't these people worry about some of America's finest conservatives? Men like Justice Thomas and Dr. Sowell? They and others get threats of violence all the time, often from the people who now worry about Senator Obama. Go figure.)
Election campaign identity politics rhetoric blares as daily calls to relish the thought of "change" -- and at last! an end of white-thousand-years of wickedness! "America can be better!"
My thoughts turn to the movie Mississippi Burning. An incident in Wisconsin is but one of several and is no less likely to occur than violence against a black candidate -- indeed, given the numbers vis-a-vis, the public v. one lone candidate, I'd say it is darn near infinitely more likely to occur as we near November.
"Todd Mitchell and several friends had just seen the movie Mississippi Burning . . . As Mitchell and his friends left the theater, a white youngster walked by, and Todd Mitchell said to his companions: 'You all want to f*** somebody up? There goes a white boy, go get him.' The white boy was beaten so badly that he suffered severe injury."
This case was widely publicized -- owing to the widespread belief that Mr. Mitchell was treated unfairly as he was charged with a "hate crime." It went all the way to SCOTUS.
