I don’t think encouraging college students to be armed on campus is a good thing.

Given the state of things, I'll peacefully disagree.

Have fun at school, sweetie... here's your MacBook Pro, your American Express, and your Walther P99. That's how much Daddy loves you.

Here in Indiana they have 2 types of permits, strictly concealed and another one where you can carry it exposed I believe. My wife is applying for one and she is getting the same as mine, strictly concealed but I think I read somewhere there is another permit also to wear it on your hip exposed.

I was prosecuted unsuccessfully for “carrying concealed” because my gun was “concealed” in a holster. Never doubt the ferocity of a young DA to want to rack up a lot of “gun” cases... so as to further a political career of “getting guns off the street”. My legal bills were over $4000. I will never “open carry” again... even though it is “legal” in most non-urban parts of California.

Oh... I was hiking near Big Bear (the name “Big Bear” might signify why I was carrying).

It would be my wish that people would stop fearing guns and start fearing criminals. The perception from Law Enforcement, that anyone with a gun is dangerous, is a malicious paranoia that should be stopped.

I hear over and over from friends and neighbors that they think only the police should have guns. My response is... “someone starts shooting right now. Go get a cop.” Oh... They’re not around. Police do not protect... they write police reports! I’m not trying to badmouth Law Enforcement, but unless they are there at the moment, there is no protection. It’s just a pragmatic evaluation.

If you want real safety, you must provide your own. (Just don’t show your weapon...lol)

Never heard of an open permit in In unless its a leo/security guard thing. Only concealed carry for peons AFAIK...no open carry...better look up the statutes...

I was charged for a .357 taurus, only had about 20 rounds thru it. Charge was dropped on my agreement to surrender said revolver for ‘destruction’... wonder why the cop never showed up for the court date...

This is impossible. It’s illegal to carry a gun in NY.

Oh I only carry concealed, my permit specifically states that if I display my weapon other than in an emergency or if asked by a LEO then I will risk losing it. I will look at my wife’s paperwork tonight, I will try and find what I was remembering if I can.

Yeah, remember: when the classroom shooting starts, the cops will be just outside the building, hiding behind the trees.

"what was reported as a handgun.”

I find this curious and hope we get more details. There are only a couple types of media-approved firearms: a) a big, black, menacing handgun (may or may not be also be termed a '.357 Magnum', b)an Uzi, or c)an AK-47...

I’m all for supporting concealed carry for anyone who wants to and is law-abiding. There’s a difference between allowing something and encouraging it for a specific population.

"I had a conversation with a friend who suggested that professors be armed. Imagine that... insane leftist wackos would be the only ones with guns. (shudder)

Not all college profs are liberal wackos - I'm sitting here waiting for my class to file in and beleive me I am in no way manner or form liberal.

my lady calls me "right of limbaugh"

“Brandishing is in the eye of the person that sees or thinks they see a gun.”

If someone knows you are carrying, then it is considered brandishing. They don’t even have to see the actual gun, but can see an outline of it under your clothing.

Well if there was no CCP reciprocity, then it is illegal even if they did have a CCP for their home state. So that doesn’t count. They should have known the law beforing carrying out of state.

A lot of places allow open carry and you don’t need any registration to do that. You still a have to obey the law, such as not openly carrying in gun-free zones. Also you are kind of dumb if you open carry in the streets where the police can then charge you with disturbing the peace if they feel like it (whether or not that will stick is another thing entirely).

Open carry is meant more for shop owners or those collecting money from self serve parking lots and such. Also open carry pertains to hunters, but even then there are often strict rules about the type of weapon you can open carry depending on the specific type of hunting you are engaged in. There are a lot of rules and some rules supercede others depending on the place, time of day, and what you are doing at the time.

That totally sucks. I’ve heard of those cases and the bogus application of the law. The game warden or whomever arrested you was being a jerk. You are not the only one arrested for open carry in bear country.

However, this is still not addressing the question I posed, which was specific to those intending to conceal carry and having a CCP and then purposely using the weapon for self defense. The law should protect that use.

As I said it is in the eye of the viwer or reporter. I would call brandishing playing cowboy.

Brandishing would not apply to self defense (in most cases), but you need to meet the felony test... you have to be prepared to stop the commission of a felony, the same test as “citizen’s arrest”. You cannot affect a citizen’s arrest for something that is not an “obvious felony”. Gun defense follows the same pattern.

If you pull a gun on someone who failed to pick up after their dog... you’re toast.

If you pull a gun on someone who has just smashed a car window... you’re good. (depending on your local law enforcement... they generally don’t like the competition)
