Widespread outages reported in Florida

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080226/ap_on_re_us/florida_outages

MIAMI - Florida’s largest utility shut down a nuclear reactor south of Miami Tuesday, causing sporadic power outages affecting more than 3 million people across the southern end of the state.

Authorities did not specify the cause of the shutdown but say there were no safety concerns.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the two Florida Power & Light nuclear reactors at its Turkey Point plant 30 miles south of Miami automatically shut down.

Two other power plants farther north, the Crystal River reactor and St. Lucie twin reactors, continue to operate, although officials at those two facilities noticed the grid disturbance.

“FNC just said there was an issue with the reactors at Turkey Point.”

LOL

A Fox babe also said Turkey Hill. No hills for hundreds of miles.

Sure seems like there’s a WHOLE LOT more to this story and one of my first thoughts was to wonder if there’s some connection to this and the guy who bolted from police at MIA.

Florida says blackout over, power being restored

Linda Campbell of the Florida Reliability Coordinating Council said preliminary reports showed that a problem at a substation in Dade County led to the loss of a transmission line and the shutdown of power plants owned by Florida Power & Light, a unit of FPL Group.

Anyone know if that makes sense?

A local news anchor said they saw black smoke YESTERDAY coming from Turkey Point, and they called then, and were told everything was ok.

I wish I had more info. It was a temporary local news feed into Fox from (I think?) WVEA? They were showing a picture of the plant, and one of the people asked if all that smoke (white steam) was normal. Then the guy taking the picture made the comment about the black smoke yesterday.

It might make sense- it might not. It really depends on whether or not they actually SHUT DOWN the two nuke plants at Turkey Point. The way I understand it- IF the nukes shut down, it affects the Florida grids, which in turn denies them power. It takes time for them to acquire power from other sources to get back up and running. HOWEVER- if Turkey Point was really shut down- all the power being restored is coming from separate facilities- they’re on their own instead of drawing from the main source at TP.

The question is did they really shut down TP? If that is the case, it will take many hours if not a few days to bring it back online.

Make sense?

FNC is pathetic. When the tornados hit The Villages. A Fox dude drew a liine 20 miles north of Orlando on a map with Orlando clearly shown to the south, claiming the tornados were south. FNC sux. CNN is better at this. FNC is the hysteria and lawyered up network except for Brit.

This is all very suspicious, if you ask me.
MIAMI (AP) — Florida’s largest electric company shut down a nuclear reactor south of Miami for mechanical reasons Tuesday, causing sporadic power outages covering large portions of the state that could last well into the night. More than 3 million people are affected, the state says.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said that the two Florida Power & Light nuclear reactors at its Turkey Point power point 30 miles south of Miami automatically shut down. Two other power plants farther north, the Crystal River reactor and St. Lucie twin reactors, in the state continued to operate, although officials at those two facilities noticed the grid disturbance.

I'm hanging in there. Finished radiation treatments yesterday. Glad it was yesterday rather than today. It would be very scary to have the radiation seed stuck inside me when the lights go out. Yikes!
