“Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”
To my knowledge, the Democrats haven’t done this in many years since the Dem candidate was already determined by the time Texas came around. I suspect that process will be a mess tonight.
Awarded delegate numbers for presidential candidates are different than determining names of delegates to go to the state convention. No delegates to the state convention are decided tonight. There are precinct conventions by both parties tonight. They select the names of delegates to go to the county convention which is held close to the end of March. Names of delegates and alternates to the state convention are decided then.
One year, I read on the Texas Democrat website how they selected delegates to their state convention. They hold out some number of delegates to award them to self identified gays, transgenders, lesbians, etc. in order to have a representative group of them at their state convention. I envisioned this on an application to be a Demodrat delegate: “I am a man, but I’m undergoing an operation to be a woman and will be a woman by the time of the convention. What do you want me to put down - man or woman?”
I was stunned when I read their selection process for delegates. Unbelievable.
Oh well, guess we’ll go to dinner. :)
