“Mortar fire wounds 2 in w. Negev”
By ELIE LESHEM AND JPOST.COM STAFF

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Two residents of the western Negev neighborhood of Netiv Ha’asara were lightly wounded Tuesday morning by mortar fire from the Gaza Strip. The two were taken to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon for further treatment. One of the shells hit a house that had been damaged by a previous mortar attack several months ago.

Earlier, five mortar shells fired from northern Gaza landed near the perimeter fence in the Kissufim area. There were no reports of wounded or damage.

Meanwhile, the IDF announced that in a joint operation with the Shin Ben (Israel Security Agency) on February 25, Muhamad Kassem, a Hamas operative who was planning an attack on IDF soldiers, was arrested.

The army said that Kassem, 18, a resident of Beit Lahiya, admitted during his investigation that he was involved in a series of attempts to attack IDF soldiers, including planting and activating explosive devices, ambushing IDF patrols, scouting for intelligence and participating in the planning of a suicide bomb attack.

In September 2007, Kassem was recruited by Hamas’s suicide bombers. As a part of his training, Kassem was supposed to receive an explosive belt weighing 20 kg intended for a suicide bombing attack but he was arrested before he received the belt.

During his investigation, Kassem admitted that he and a number of other Hamas operatives were involved in planting and activating explosive devices against IDF tanks.”

Radioactive Container Stolen from Contractors Staying at Pharr Motel (Texas)
April 1, 2008

Authorities are working with a Houston-based drilling company to find $2 million worth of stolen tools and a radioactive container. The equipment was stolen along with a Ford F-250 truck from outside a Pharr motel, nearly two weeks ago. The truck was recovered over the weekend near Falfurrias in neighboring Brooks County. But there was no sign of the radioactive substance.

Lt. Lupe Salinas with the Pharr Police Department said authorities have used a helicopter and searched high and low for the radioactive substance but so far have come up empty handed. Anyone who comes across the container is asked not to touch it but instead to call authorities immediately.

London terror bomb plot foiled
4/01/08

POLICE have foiled a plot to bomb the London Eye and MI6 headquarters, The Sun can reveal.

Terrorists tested security by leaving two bags outside the intelligence service building on the Thames at Vauxhall and another at the giant ferris wheel on the South Bank. But the bags – containing small metal weights – were spotted at both iconic targets. The London Eye was evacuated.

Bomb squad probes Queanbeyan River gelignite (Australia)
April 1, 2008

A bomb disposal robot is being used by members of the Police Bomb Squad to dispose of gelignite found in the Queanbeyan River. Police divers made the discovery while investigating the death of a man whose body was found in the river on Sunday. The dead man's identity and cause of death are expected to be announced tomorrow.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Carr says she cannot confirm if the incidents are related, but police are continuing their investigations. "At about 12:20pm (AEDT) they located a small amount of commercial grade gelignite AN60," she said. "The AFP (Australian Federal Police) bomb squad have been called in to assist with that and are in the process of rendering it safe.

"It's too early to in our investigation to say if they're related."

Egypt arrests Hamas man plotting to kill senior Fatah official
04.01.08

A gunmen belonging to the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, was arrested in Egypt on suspicion of plotting to assassinate a senior Fatah official who was visiting the country, the London-based Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat reported Tuesday.

The newspaper quoted Egyptian sources as saying that at the time of his arrest the Hamas member, Ayman Nufel, was in possession of an automatic assault rifle and explosives. One of the sources added that despite Hamas' request the detainee would not be released anytime soon as he "harmed Egypt's national security".

The sources added that Nufel is the only Hamas member in Egyptian custody, this after 33 members of the Islamist group apprehended during January's Gaza-Egypt border breach were recently released. Senior Hamas member Bassem Naim denied Egypt's claim, saying "I reject the possibility that one of the movement's senior members was involved in this act. "The accused, as a member of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, does not travel unarmed," Naim told Al-Hayat.

New South Wales aircraft pilots targeted by lasers on the ground (Australia)
Mon, 31 Mar 2008

An Australian state may ban hand-held laser pointers after six planes arriving in Sydney were forced to alter their flight paths, officials said Sunday.

Beams from four green lasers, which appeared to come from an area just southwest of the city, were directed at planes for 15 minutes late Saturday, in what officials labelled a "coordinated attack." They do not know who was behind it.

63 al-Qaeda militants apprehended (Turkey)
April, 2, 2008

A total of 45 al-Qaeda militants were taken into custody in simultaneous operations conducted in several districts across İstanbul yesterday following the apprehension of another group of 18 militants in an operation on Monday night.

The police had been pursuing the latter group, which was suspected of having links to al-Qaeda, for eight months after receiving permission to do so from the court. The police took action Monday night as soon as they discovered where the group was staying.

Approximately 300 security forces including police as well as special forces took part in the operations. The inspection of the suspects' computers also uncovered some of their plans and their encoded conversations with the terror organization's links abroad. The group is reportedly specialized in bomb making. The second group of militants, including six university students enrolled in law school, will be questioned by the police for four days.

Many suspected al-Qaeda militants were detained after a clash with police that killed four militants and a policeman in January when anti-terror police carried out simultaneous raids on many houses in the southeastern provinces of Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş on intelligence that al-Qaeda militants were planning to stage bomb attacks across the country. Some of the suspects were incarcerated.

Turkish police have carried out a series of operations across the country and captured dozens of alleged al-Qaeda militants since homegrown suicide bombers linked to the terrorist group hit İstanbul in 2003, killing 58 people in attacks that targeted two synagogues, the British Consulate and a British bank. Last year, seven people were sentenced to life in prison for the bombings.
