McCain's Daunting Task
New York Times ^ | March 10, 2008 | By WILLIAM KRISTOL

Posted on 03/10/2008 7:21:56 PM PDT by vmivol00

Perhaps the most obvious way McCain could upend the normal dynamics of this year’s election would be a bold vice presidential choice. He could pick a hawkish and principled Democrat like Joe Lieberman. He could reach beyond the usual bevy of elected officials by tapping either David Petraeus or Raymond Odierno — the two generals who together, in an amazing demonstration of leadership and competence, turned the war in Iraq around last year. He could persuade the most impressive conservative in American public life, Clarence Thomas, to join the ticket. There are other unorthodox possibilities.

No he needs to remain on the court.

If he were to run, Thomas would be spoiled meat, win or lose. He would have politicized himself and hounded from the court in the event of a loss.

And wouldn’t he have to retire from the court prior to running? What do we know about the New York Times? We know they don’t like Republicans, and they don’t like judicial conservatives. If they could get a Supreme Court Justice who could be on the Supreme Court for another 20-30 years to retire and then get a Republican presidential nominee defeated, that would be a two-fer.

Major General Jerry Curry would be great also. A conservative Black American who rose through the ranks, has served three presidents and overcame tremendous adversity. He was a Republican candidate but, few knew about him.

Hopefully McCain picks a serious conservative with an extraordinary economics background.

And do you think that the Dems would vote to replace him this late in the game?

Do you have to take him off the S. Court? What does the Constitution say about constitutional officers holding more than one office simultaneously?

And if there is a question, it’s up to SCOTUS to resolve, isn’t it?

What if the ticket is McCain/Romney?

Why would he have to leave the court? The campaign would only last a few months. Governors and Senators aren’t expected to resign.

Re: Clarence Thomas for VP

Get real, folks! Bill Kristol is full of horsehockey! Clarence Thomas will do much more for this nation right where he is!

Beware removing a true conservative voice from the Court with a RAT Senate in place. That it’s in the NYT, by Kristol or not, is a danger signal. Justice Thomas needs to stay where he is.

He’d have the leave the court if McCain wins but I see no reason why he’d have to leave before the election. If McCain loses (which he will), Thomas could stay on the court.

What can Romney add to the ticket? Romney couldn’t beat Huckabee in the south.

Bad, bad idea. He is much more valuable as a SC Justice, especially with a criminirat senate in charge of the Judiciary Committee Chair.

Young Mr. Kristol,
You must be incapable of realizing the depth of your inanity.
Like Most DC asshats.. your narcissistic scope is aimed only on Yourself and your importance in your own mind.
As for the rest of us ACTUAL CONSERVATIVES out here in the Hinterland.
You are wicked F’in STOOPID and we Conservatives totally disagree.
Now..you can satisfy yourself as being superior
OR you can realize that those of us who BELIEVE in true Conservatism
are poised and ready
we will crush your inanity.
You will appear as you are.. a buffoon

I’d rather have Thomas on the court than going to funerals of unimportant foreign leaders and occasionally casting votes as president of the senate. Thomas for VP is a TOTALLY crazy idea.

Was Bill Kristol drunk when he wrote this?!?
