Following are excerpts from President Bush's speech made Friday at the Economic Club of New York.
This is not the first time since I've been president that we have faced economic challenges. We inherited a recession. And there were the attacks of September the 11th, 2001, which many of you saw firsthand, and you know full well how that affected our economy.
Then we had corporate scandals. And I made the difficult decisions to confront the terrorists and extremists on two major fronts, Afghanistan and Iraq. We had devastating natural disasters. And the interesting thing, every time, is this economy has bounced back better and stronger than before.
So I'm coming to you as an optimistic fellow. I've seen what happens when America deals with difficulty. I believe that we're a resilient economy, and I believe that the ingenuity and resolve of the American people is what helps us deal with these issues. And it's going to happen again.
Our job in Washington is to foster enterprise and ingenuity so we can ensure our economy is flexible enough to adjust to adversity and strong enough to attract capital. And the challenge is not to do anything foolish in the meantime. In the long run, I'm confident that our economy will continue to grow, because the foundation is solid.

I love Bush. I wish he was prez for life.

When history is written, it will show President Bush as the best President of this century, if not of all times
I wholeheartedly agree with you both!
I hope so. I daytrade stocks and keep bloomberg on all day. Anytime the prez gives a speech they usually show it.
He gave a great great speech today. So honest, so direct, so true.
Even the democrats deep down are in awe of this guy.
John
Thanks
The bus driver said, “No moron!”
That leaves out both of you.
Only if his mom writes the History.
Better than Washington, are you nuts?!?
No, I’m serious
Ditto.
He got us out of the recession that was firmly established before he took office.
He got us out of the airline industry slump , remember each of the 9/11 aircraft were flying less than half full. Now many there is hardly an empty seat.
He helped the country bounce back in spades from the 9/11 blow which affected us all.
Unemployment is at an all time low, and I for once in my 22 years of being employed at a large Aircraft Manufacturer, feel my job is safe for a long time.
The War on terror. What more can I say about our success?
If there is one area where I would give him a failure, it would be on his energy policy. In 2001 he addressed the high cost of gas ($1.65 a gal) and what must be done. He did so again in 2003, and again in 2005, and now again in 2008, and not one of the recommendations in his 2001 plan have yet to be implemented.
I give Bush low grades for his dealing with the rats. He has never recognized that rats are the enemy. They should never be accommodated. During his first term, he looked like a winner even though his rat dealings were a huge mistake (campaign finance reform, expansions in domestic programs, and no child left behind). During his second term, the amnesty proposal was a major mistake because it split conservatives and was terrible policy. The Energy Act of 2007 was the worst mistake of his presidency. Even though he did refuse several terrible provisions, he still signed a terrible bill. He was very positive about the bill too. Energy was an area that I instinctively trusted Bush and Cheney. I cannot understand why he promotes biofuel mandates. He knows that energy markets do not work with mandates. He has also made favorable overtures toward global warming that bewilder me.
Most of the failures during Bush's presidency are a result of the weak conservative influence on the party. In the 1980s, the rats were divided even though they controlled the legislature during most of the period. The Republican party is badly split over most issues (tax cuts, entitlements, energy, and global warming). The rats even in their weakest moment in 2004, are firmly united in Marxist intentions except for a few house rats.
I agree that Bush is a great president, tho don’t know if he’s the greatest, or even greater than Washington. But I believe that some day his greatness will be recognized by all.
I know that President Bush is the man to guide our Nation through this economic crisis. He understands how important it is to support the financial system that is the backbone of our American free-enterprise capitalist system.
Funny you say that but the history channel ran a 6 hour docu on the revolutionay war and washington.
Many people tried to get rid of washington. Thought him to be dumb and inept.
He ignored it and concerntrated on the war and winning.
He had many many distractors. It was not a unified front against the british. Washington held the war effort together by the sheer force of his will.
Washington was constantly being underestimated by the british and some of those in his command who tried to get rid of him and take his place.
John
Goverment wants high oil prices because of the revenue it generates for the treasury.
Goverment makes several times more on a gallon of gas then the oil companies to.
Its a slick way of increasing taxes without people realizing it.
If the goverment wanted low oil prices we would have nuke plants everywhere and drilling in Anwar.
John
Sorry, but this is just absurd. Bush is better than average. He looks great by comparing him to Clinton and he'll stand well against whichever one of the three amigos follows him. He's marginal compared to this guy...
“Our job in Washington is to foster enterprise and ingenuity so we can ensure our economy is flexible enough to adjust to adversity and strong enough to attract capital.”
What a bunch of bull. Capital has been flooding out of the US and into Mexico and China for years now and neither he nor congress has lifted a finger to stop it.
W is one of the worst economic presidents we’ve had. I like how in his speech it’s everybody’s fault but his.
