“I had heard myself personally in the pews”
That sure is a lot of words to say “I haven’t heard it.”

Even if he didn't hear it personally, are we supposed to believe that he never heard about it from another parishioner? If someone goes to the same church 20 yr., he knows lots of other people who attend, and presumably they would fill him in.

There`s the hair splitting, maybe not “in the pews” but he has heard it:
Mr. Wright said that in the phone conversation in which Mr. Obama disinvited him from a role in the announcement, Mr. Obama cited an article in Rolling Stone, The Radical Roots of Barack Obama.
According to the pastor, Mr. Obama then told him, You can get kind of rough in the sermons, so what weve decided is that its best for you not to be out there in public.
